from my previous experience with steam preloading, no. it'll unlock usually pacific standard time at 8 pm or something.

You've got almost double what I have (2.67 download here)--I've just got into the habit of leaving large games downloading overnight. (Started XR preload at 2:30am this morning and it finished a couple of hours ago).

Yup, no problem when you can anticipate. The only issue is when I want to play a game I've not played for a while. Ok let's play this ! "Game files have changed, steam will download a part of it." 5GB. Damn it ! Not today...

BTW, thanks for X Rebirth preload, it really helps.

depends how good the archive / file compression is. everyone said the same about skyrims download/disc size and look how big that game was.

with the frequency that I reformat my HDD a year, paired with how long I go without upgrading storage devices, an SSD would be so degraded by the second or close to 3rd year that my current drive would out class it in read speed.

Don't see why...formatting a drive is a fairly simple operation and generally involves writing to each sector of it just once, so it's not going to damage an SSD much. In addition, the read speed of an SSD never changes much--it's the write speed that suffers as the drive fills up, because the wear levelling algorithms have less spare room to work with and take longer to do their job.

Files will be compacted for ease of download, extracted when installed fully. Im sure you will see a significant size increase.

We're still talking about gamefiles, though (many of which have their own inherent compressions - e.g. image formats, 3d models - and don't really compress any further efficiently). I don't think I've ever seen a modern game with compressed size of less than 80% of normal - being generous and allowing a 3/4 compression, we're still at, what, 5.something gigs? That's still a small size for a modern game.

Also, doesn't steam unpack the data instantly? The installation size on disk should be the final game size once it's been downloaded - so if that's 4.4gigs, then that's 4.4 gigs.

Locate the folder called depotcache in your steam directory.

Copy it to somewhere else on your computer.
