Just started the game, a few questions

Post by SirConnery » Thu, 27. Dec 18, 18:56

I've played 12 hours thus far. So far I've managed to get myself a small ship and a larger mining vessel.
I have some random questions about the game.

1. When you take guard/escort missions does the game spawn new enemies for it?
2. How exactly do you do the hugely profitable "new gate scouting" mission? I found conflicting answers online.
3. How can you place your asteroid mining ship on automatic mining mode or something?
4. Does your mining ship's crew size/skills matter?
5. Does it matter who in the station is your trade agent?

So far enjoying the game.

Yes. Rebirth spawns things left, right and center.
2. How exactly do you do the hugely profitable "new gate scouting" mission? I found conflicting answers online.
You need to map out all three systems added by the Home of Light DLC (Cold Star, Home of Light and Toride), i.e. visit every sector and every zone in them. That's quite a bit of flying.
3. How can you place your asteroid mining ship on automatic mining mode or something?
There are no fully automated miners in vanilla. You can order a ship to mine specific resources in a particular zone, but it will contact you once it's done and you'll have to manually tell it what to do. What you can do is set up a warehouse with bulk and/or liquid storage, set it to "buy" the resources and assign a few mining ships to it. That way you'll only need to manage one warehouse instead of several miners.
4. Does your mining ship's crew size/skills matter?
The captain matters for flying/mining. The engineer matters for repairs. The defense officer matters for, well, defense. Probably the most important is the captain: the higher their skill, the better/faster they're flying, therefore the faster they mine. What also increases the efficiency is drones: there are Mk1 and Mk2 variants for both bulk collectors (Surface Miner URV) and liquid collectors (Scoop Collector URV). Mk2 variants are more efficient.
5. Does it matter who in the station is your trade agent?
Unless you're planning to start hostilities with their faction, no.

One minor point: although the game does explicitly categorize ships into "Trade/Mine", at least for large ships that categorization doesn't really matter. What makes a large ship a miner is:
- it needs to have Bulk and/or Liquid storage
- it needs to have appropriate mining drones

You can even make an XL freighter into a miner by giving it both Scoop Collectors and Surface Miners.
