They have a lot more DAKKA. I'm slowly changing my trading fleet from paranid demeters to split buffalos because when the SCA come knocking, they get knocked the **** out by eight flak cannons.

Just get a bunch of Split M Traders and never have that problem again since no pirate will be able to catch up to them xD

Oh cool, they can use the mk 4 engines. That's a good idea.

Haven't found out yet. Do freighters with a skilled pilot know to use their travel drive yet?

I'm pretty sure freighters with any pilot use their travel drives. They use them in my save anyway.

Ya, they use travel drive. I always used to have a fleet of Mercuries, as they offered the best compromise between speed and carrying capacity. However, the Boa is heaps faster and only 300 units short, making it clearly THE choice nowadays.

Why stop there? During my 3.0b game I was predominantly using XL freighters, specifically Nomad Sentinels. Similar level of firepower to L freighters, but with substantially stronger shields & a MUCH thicker hull. Can even dock a couple of M gunships to double it's firepower (i.e. 16 flak turrets in total). One of them even managed to hold off an SCA Behemoth for long enough for me to send a fleet of my own Behemoths from a nearby sector to assist - Nomad's shields were at around 30% by the time they arrived but it survived the encounter.

My current boarding ship is now a buffalo, the flak cannons wreck all the surface elements of capital ships in seconds.
