How are my ships attacking if everything is disabled?

I have a transport ship, so no main batteries, I have disabled all turrets, I have disabled defense drones (I don't see them out). I see them flying through a sector that is owned by a third party to my conflict (which is why I have everything disabled), yet I see the enemy fighters taking hits, both wiggling on the map as well as their shields and hulls going down. Fortunately none got killed so I didn't get pummelled with the rep loss. But I shouldn't be shooting them at all. What am I missing here?
