[Question] Can anyoneexplain how waypoints work and what kind of waypoints are needed for what?

As title says. I know they are for docking and the docking drones, but what waypoints do you really need and how does it work? For example how can I say that a ship docks frontal or sidewards? What is the start and end node for the drones and will drones automatically fly the the same path backwards or do I need 2 different paths?
