I'll make this short as to save reading time.
So I installed the star wars mod and was keen to get stuck straight into capital ships and fleet fights. Wanted to edit the save file to make my rep +30 with each faction to check out all the different ships. Found the save, extracted the xml, edited it, now I'm just stuck as to how to get it back where it belongs in the correct format (.gzip).
Could use a hand, thanks. Clearly I'm completely computer illiterate.

Re: Editing save files
You can leave it in XML format.
If you go into the game options and turn off savegame compression, games are saved in XML format by default.
That's how I edit save files. I turn off savefile compression, save the game and then edit the save XML without having to extract or repack it.

Re: Editing save files
Download 7-zip and use that to re-compress the file back into gzip format.
