Yep, it's a skin. As are "Opportunity" and "Disposal Unit 3", which also come up as war-chain-mission rewards.

Current theory is because 42 is the ASCII value of * and using a "*" in many computer languages means everything and anything at the same time, wild pattern !

Nope. Douglas Adams himself (in interviews) said these theories trying to find patterns and deep motives are wrong. He just needed a random number that sounded good.
Most people seemingly never read the books, because at some later parta it is revealed that at the exact time someone finds out the question, the universe automatically reconfigures itself to change that into something completely different.
