Which destroyers should I buy?

Post by Gregorovitch » Sun, 12. May 19, 17:17

So after a round of station upgrades I still got about 120m Cr left and I'm thinking of finally putting together my first serious fleet. I've been looking at the Argon, Teladi and Paranid options and I see that the Argon and Teladi ones are much of a mucnness with the Teladi edging it marginally in every department, however the Paranid one is decidedly different in that it:

* is about 20% faster
* has 10 M slots the others don't have in addition to the 40 S
* but has ~33% less shields

The extra speed might be nice but I'm not sure it's a material consideration, however the question of whether 10 extra M class ships > -33% shields or the other way round has got me stumped.

Would value opinion on this question.

Also my personal ship of choice at the mo' is a Paranid Nemesis but this is a glass cannon ship that's fine if I'm flying it but I fear would probably get shredded in seconds under AI control as part of a fleet no matter how fast it is or how many cannons it sports. I am thinking the best S and M class ships for fleet operations are those with max possible shielding, which means I'm thinking Teladi.

Again opinions valued.

IMO, the most powerful destroyer is the one with the best fighters.
Get any of the 3 (vanguard or sentinel) , add 20 s-fighters.
You won't be dissapointed.

You can buff the destroyers shields/speed/dps/maneuverability etc... with in game modifications at a shipyard. You can try boarding pirate Behemoths. The teladi destroyer works good ai wise I haven't tried the other ones. Out of sector your destroyers should be fairly safe. You'll probably need more than one destroyer and you'll have to watch them with station guns or they'll get blown up. A destroyer plus 20-40 s size fighters should be able to take over a sector. Paranid destroyer can dock 1 m class ship which can add extra drones/supplies/turrets to the ship. Just set the turrets to attack all enemies and it should release it's drones and fire it's turrets. The extra speed might be good after the fight for patrolling sectors.

Odysseus has much more turrets, twice as much L turrets. And all 4 can fire in a much better radius then Behemoth (still ok) and Teladi (horribel position).

And my personal reason why i prefer oddys for myself. The mainguns are in the middle of the ship. So can easy hit even smaller targets, with Teladi/Argon u can often hit with only 1 canon not both.

Fighter slots don*t matter. Because u never want fighters dock on a destroyer. For what?

For my NPC Pilots i buy all 3 the scripts are so bad. It's only luck which one is bugging arround or attacking. Destroyers are so cheap, if one is not enough buy 10 or 50....

I guess fighter is more effective than destroyer, supposedly destroyers should be powerful but not and better spent spawn of fighter so they said.

yes, the turrets are down so fast- you get a Countdown of Shield + Hull for the Destroyer to get destroyed.
so if S-fighters can knock out any Capital without losses - i guess they are the weapon of choice.

as a Playership - a Ms are most likely better.

Don't know about the paranide destroyer, but the stats on paper do not always reflect the truth in game.

If you compare Argon and Teladi's destroyers, they are almost the same, in fact the Teladi is total crap. The argon one have better placed turrets, that mean you can have him shot it's 2 "main guns" and 2 L turrets at the same target doubling the effective DPS, while the Teladi one should engage broadside to have it's L turret shoot at the target ... With 2 front mounted main gun. So it never really focus it's damages but spread them on multiple targets if possible, making it simply useless as the main guns are crappy on their own. Smart engineer design i guess ...

And it's the same with the carriers, Teladis are really pro are putting their L turrets at places they will never shoot.

All of them can kick some serious stern, with that said it boils down to your intended use. Want to take down caps fast? Take the Odysseus. Not only can it bring 3 L turrets to bear on one target, it also can bring in 10 M fighters. That´s some serious fire power. You want something a bit more rounded? The Behemoth is your choice. No real weaknesses, but also no real strengths. It is a jack of all trades. The Phoenix is what I call an escort destroyer. Great fighting S/M sized ships and civilian L/XL ships, but struggles against military L/XL ships.

I'm really enjoying flying the Oddy myself. I can quickly and easily snipe the turrets off a Xenon K at 6-7k, with the main guns, out of weapon range for the K, and roll up and melt it with the plasma turrets.

I find destroyers are not much use until well in the game when you are ready to kill Xenon wharfs and shipyards. Then you need a few of them to do the job. I lost a few though, because those shipyards can have some mean defences. I am currently building up a fleet of destroyers and I want to lead them in with a follow command. I hope they stay close to me so I can get them near enough for their main battery and far enough to stay out of harm's way. For earlier in the game killing K and I destroyers is best done with a Nemesis I think. A K can be killed fairly quickly and the I takes quite a while. I am not sure why they have no defence drones or way of defending themselves against a player getting in the blind spot and picking them off. They should withdraw back to base when their escort is gone. Dealing with them OOS is best done with 24 Perseus fighters equipped with beam weapons I find. Not too expensive and can build enough when you have your own wharf to cover losses. Keep an eye on them and send damaged ones for repair (I wish station managers knew to do this so i would not have to micro manage it). This makes destroyers redundant for most tasks apart from station killing. They are too valuable to risk on an I etc.
p.s. I tried all the destroyers when I had the cheat module installed. I actually had the best results with the Teladi one, but the Argon one had pretty similar results, but one on one with a K I was finding my engines getting shot out and making me a sitting duck. The Paranid ones can't take as much of a beating but the extra speed helps. Turret and missile ranges seem strange to me. A WW2 tank has better range just about.
Nemesis seems to be most people's favourite player ship. It can do over 700ms with engine mods and a cooling mod on Bolt guns means they can dispatch a K fairly quickly without too much wait time for cooling. Going for a damage mod is tempting, but then you find you have overheated guns too often. No use in that. The hardest fights are always when you run into those fleets of P corvettes and M/N fighters. They will all bear down on you head on and strip off your shields. Try to dogfight them all and you will be toast. Pick a target and line it up from over 10km and keep your speed to make an attack run. Get 10km out and turn back in for another.
I was amazed to see the HOP drive several destroyers, corvettes, fighters, and a supply vessel into Faulty Logic yesterday. I followed them in today expecting they would be hitting stations. Nope. They do a patrol and then get out of there. In the meantime an I was wreaking havok in their capital sector. A.I. is much better since I played X3R years ago, but there are still things to do. It can obviously muster a fleet, so now it needs to detect and deal with major threats. The Inanamus Zura sector was overrun when I went there to visit the rep and the trading station where he hangs out was out of order. No profits in not defending your capital. Silly Teladi.

I'm currently using 2x Behemoth vanguard equipped with beam turrets and 2x plasma turrets on the large slots set to attack current target so they dish out extra damage vs capitals and stations. They work pretty well and can 1vs1 xenon K unless the K has a few fighters that wreck the turrets first.

Right now they are escorting a Colossus with 27x buzzard/eclipse killing a few xenon stations.

i have a few of all the destroyers, and the Ody is my favorite as it's the only one that reliably enters into the fight. All the rest of my destroyers tend to just float around the far edges of the fights I set them to, doing nothing. My Ody is actually in the mix with the rest of my ships.
