I'm not sure but iirc then you need to find the install.exe on the X2 CD, then left click once to select it (not twice to run it!) and right click to open a menue. There you should see the option to run it in compatibility mode.
Same with the 2.0.02 upgrade: select the file and right click.
Hope that helps.

Actually, you just need to right click the setup.exe and 'run as administrator'. It will work in Vista.
You will also have to take control of the folder where it installs (after it installs). To do this go to where you installed it Right click go to properties, go to security and then advanced, hit the tab for 'owner'. Click on your username, hit edit (also continue). Click on your username again and hit edit... Then hit alow full control, hit okay, then apply... Close all those screens and that user account now has full control over the files in that folder.
That is needed for savegames... Another thing also has to be done, which is much easier. Go to the properties of the x2.exe, then compatibility, then 'show settings for all users', and contine. Then hit 'run this program as an administrator'. (Its important you go to 'show settings for all users FIRST!). Hit apply and close out of everything...
Then you should have a complely working X2 in MS Vista.

This is pretty wierd but when I use the nocdpatch for my orriginal game wich is I think v1.0 or 1.2 I can't remember. But it worked just fine. Now that I have upgraded it to 1.4 I can't get it to work. Even if I try it with the official nocdpatch.
The game starts just fine but it crashes when ever I try to start a new game or even load an old one.

There was no NoCD patch for any version prior to 1.4, so whatever you were using before either broke it if it was the official one, or was illegal if it wasn't in which case any further discussion of it will result in this thread being locked. Either way, it sounds like your installation is corrupt. Reinstall from the original CD, apply the necessary patch(es) to bring your game up to 1.4, apply the offical NoCD patch, and then run the game.
I have the same problem, this is the message from the Application log:

I also have this problem on a Compaq Presario V6000 laptop with a Core 2 Duo T5200 @ 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, Intel 945GM graphics (yes, integrated, but really should be able to cope).
Here's a screenshot (Vista Home Premium)

I have tried all compatability modes and I'm tearing my hair out.
Can somebody please help? I have tried this game on five computers over the course of four years and none have worked. I'm beginning to think this game is cursed.

I have installed and patched upto 1.4 and installed the no NOCD patch. I have tried the suggestions above, and get the message you need one of these OS to run X2:- 95, 98, NT4, 2K, XP or Server 2003.
Any ideas, I see other people can run X2, using Vista. And that others are having problems.

Hi All,
I just tryed to install on VISTA and also faild with the installation. It just ends and says: That the installation was ended before it could finish.
I also tryed all the different ways like Admin, WinXP with SP2 and so on. also turned of the accounts options.
It seems, it just doesnt want to be installed on VISTA. I hope one of the ADMINS here have a solution soon, cause I really like the game and now have a new Laptop and want to play it again.
All have a nice day . . . EXET

I'm running on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit... I installed the game and played it without any problems at all. (Until I started it up again and then played it for a bit and it told me that the CD wasn't the official one blah blah blah - there was another post about that somewhere else...) I'm used to having to do most of the other suggested tricks on here and didn't have to this time. but I will supply a few that I've seen recommended for other games that may work for this one:
Right click the X2 - The Threat.exe icon
Properties --> Compatibility tab
Click the 'Run this program in compatibility mode for..'
Then at the bottom, click the 'Run as Administrator' thing
Under the security tab, Click the edit button of each head thing and give them all full control. (Last bit might just be for MMORPG's, but hey.. At least do it for the profile you are going to be using it on.)
Try those... if that doesn't work, I don't know what to say.

In short, running the instmsiw tells the story I'm afraid.
"Wrong OS or OS version for application"
I guess if you have a newly installed Vista system without any patching it
might work. If you however have patched it, as recommended, you aren't
installing it. I tried the file in every compability mode and it refused to budge.
Compability mode for 2000 gave "The specified service already exists."
Interesting maybe but it didn't change the facts. It won't install.
Bye X universe, never coming back.
