XTM For Newbies?

I'm something of a late comer to the X universe. I discovered it just last week on steam, acquiring both X2 and X3. Berate me for my tardiness as you will :-P

As with all games that have a significant user generated content base I immediately began trawling for scripts/mods that I should install. In that search discovered the Xtended Mod. From all that I've seen and read it looks to be precisely the sort of mod that I'd be interested in. However, there remains one question: should I install it (presumably the 0.7 variety when it becomes available) for my FIRST playthrough or instead wait until I've 'beaten' (storyline in particular but opinions on galactic domination are also welcome) X3 before dabbling with it?

In my opinion, the plot game is quite secondary to the sandbox game. While XTM does add a killer second plot, what it adds to the sandbox is simply incredible. I'd recommend it for your first playthrough, though it may ruin the vanilla Xperience for you. :wink:

XTM was coupled with a change in the regular X combat soundtrack with nice battle-ish tunes from Pirates of the Caribbean for me, which just sealed the awesomeness. I recommend it. 8)

forgot to say, welcome to the X-universe. You'll be here a while, pull up a seat and buy yourself an X-52. :D

Get started in-plot or one of the other starts so you can get used to the learning curve. With the mod you will have to restart the game anyway.

Also: I already have the X52, and the Saitek Pro Pedals ;-)

...hopefully not threadjacking my own thread, but any idea how to get the rudder pedals AND the X52 working with X?

Play vanilla get the play of it, then use Mods. Its not good to just jump in with added ship classes and different designs you won't really know what is different unless you played vanilla first.

XTM has too many features, but you don't have to do what i did you asked and i replied with my opinion. :wink:

Tracker: That guy was asking how to get the throttle to work...in the case of the X52 you actually have to disable the throttle in the startup screen to get the throttle to work :?

Sadly the same logic does not seem to work for rudder pedals :(

Anyway, not the main thrust of the thread--keep the opinions on XTM coming, I like to make informed decisions =D. I've got plenty of time left in X2 to tide me over until XTM 0.7 is released if it's deigned better to start with it than not =).

usualy at this point I'd merge this in with the official XTM thread, however that was locked today due to the huge amount of spam generated when they missed their eta for the release of 0.7

XTM is not currently compatible with X3 2.0.x. Since you got your version of X3 through steam this is the version you're likely to have. So looking at XTM at the moment is, well, pointless.

I'd recommend going playing the game in its original state for a while. By which point the new version of XTM will be out, and you can see for yourself.

Actually, I am going to merge this in with the official thread. You'll be able to see what people really think of it.

this question would be better suited to PM's to mods d zorro as as currently the XTM is locked due to excessive :spam: until it's ready i'm going to have to lock this.

Due to the extreme amount of pressure on the server caused by the amount of people trying to download the mod, there are problems. Just keep trying and you will eventually get it.

More mirrors are being added as the files finish up-loading to them.

Excellent work everyone! I've downloaded and am giving it a thorough burn-in test -- the least I can do. Have posted on the public dev forum with some early observations.
