Not sure about Stargate (I assume Atlantis, since SG-1 was cancelled), but Eureka would be cheaper purely because its seasons are only 13 or so episodes, as I recall.fiksal wrote:hm, ok, so shows like Eureka and Stargate cost less? Or are those high budget too?pepperg wrote:firefly was actually a high budget show. i think the 90min pilot cost 12mil. can't see scifi ponying up that amount of cash.

Bah, I was going to clarify that in my first post, but I was sleepy.fiksal wrote:compared to 13 episodes of Firefly?DrCBVI wrote: Not sure about Stargate (I assume Atlantis, since SG-1 was cancelled), but Eureka would be cheaper purely because its seasons are only 13 or so episodes, as I recall.
Firefly was cancelled, Eureka is designed to have ~13 episodes. So far as I know, Firefly was aiming for the standard 22-per-season a'fore the axe fell.

saw that- it was entertaining
so, do folks here think that the franchise is dead, at least in terms of films, theatrical, dvd, or otherwise? the comics pretty much stink, imo.

Sadly, I'm beginning to think it's dead. It's such a shame because the fans spirit kept it alive, and now that the fan base is still growing you would think that it would be even easier to bring back. It just appears to be a property nobody wants to touch.
It amazes me how something as dull as Star Trek can go on forever...

I think you're maybe taking TNG era Trek and tarring the whole franchise with the same brush. TOS was actually revolutionary for its day--I mean, you got to see a white man snogging a black woman, which was pretty much unheard of for 1960s TV! Deep Space 9 also had its moments. (Would have to agree that most of Voyager and Enterprise were pretty tedious, though).nirwin wrote: It amazes me how something as dull as Star Trek can go on forever...
Also, Star Trek didn't go on forever. There was a fairly huge gap between TOS ending in 1969 and the release of the Motion Picture in 1979--Firefly didn't have to wait ten years before getting a movie!
Yeah you are pretty correct there, most of my experience of Star Trek is indeed based on Voyager & Enterprise (and DS9). And they were on the whole not to my taste.
Some of the films were amazing (The Voyage Home for example), and it sounds like the original series was pretty groundbreaking for it's time. Perhaps the series just started to stagnate by the time I got to see any.
Every good series should die before it gets tired in my opinion, and in this regard I'm okay with the show ending. The only problem to my mind is that I think we could have got at least another 2 seasons of top quality entertainment from Joss.

Some of you might know that there was a Firefly MMORPG in the works, FOX has canceled the rights to that one and in return the MMORPG that will come from a FOX show (property of FOX) will be Buffy.
I have mixed feelings about this, i hoped that the Firefly MMO to be good, it would probably be the only MMO i would ever play, but then again i know, from my own observations, that when franchises go to the MMO level it means that they are dying.
Don't kill my hopes for above.

eh... an MMO...
if I remember it right the game was either low budget or developer was unexperienced... or maybe both. But who knows.
A bit of Firefly of random trivia from my trip to Atlanta / DragonCon.
Morena had initially refused to play a "hooker in space". Though after the actress, who was hired instead, didnt work out, they contacted Morena again. That time apparently she went through the script and didnt find anything "hooker"-like.
Alan couldnt remember his own lines, especially techno talk and chinesse. In the case of techno talk he used to write them down and glue them to the control panel or appropriate parts of the ship / engine room.
According to Jewel, her voice would get progressively higher (pitch) with every take of the first scene of Serenity.
Everytime Morena had to do a 'bed' scene, it was a closed set with only required personal. In Nathan's case though (episode "Trash"), that was an open set in a desert.

Firefly porno?
On a general note about the series:
Personally, I don't rate Firefly that highly. Sure it was one of the better Sci-Fi shows in recent history, but given the lack of competition, thats not saying much. I also don't think much of Joss Whedon, the man who butchered the Alien series. (Hmmm... Now I think about it, if you renamed the characters in Alien 4, you'd almost have Firefly...)
That said, I wouldn't have minded another season or two, to show Sci-Fi is profitable, and more different series should be made. Alas I think its far too late now. Too much time has passed, all the sets have likely been scrapped, meaning much more expense in recreating them, and the film killed off the only character I found likable.
James Gunn ("Slither") is pulling together a new ultraproject merging some of the "Firefly" cast with some porn starlets says CHUD.
Actors Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Michael Rosenbaum, along with porn starlets Belladonna, Aria Giovanni, Jenna Haze, and Sasha Grey will star in the as yet unannounced project.
Gunn is presently working on "Humanzee", a short contribution to the Xbox Live series of comedy flicks by horror filmmakers. He's also co-hosting the reality show "Scream Queens" with "Saw" series star Shawnee Smith.

So what if Josh Whedon made a rather strange alien movie, that if you take the characters from it and his landmark TV show, put them in a room next to each other, and put bags over their heads, they would be the same people? So what if he's got a strange fascination with the Cigarette man from the x-files and his unrealistically powerful "Secret" organization, an idea he propagates in both Alien 4 and Firefly. So what if all the bad guy leaders look like the bad guy from half life. I mean really who cares. People can argue the same standard pieces falling into place with almost 7/8 of video games these days, the few stars shining out just due to the stylish way they present the game, and that was Firefly to the Letter. It was a big hoaky at times, but it was so stylish, so awesome, and so far from every other thing at the time (All of which was summed up with the words: 'So we've got a_____ who lives in an apartment in________ city, is friends with ___ gay guys _____ women, and his love interest acts uninterested... Lets let hilarity insue!') that it disserves recognition.
As for the canceling, yes it was poor ratings. Ontop of a crummy timeslot. You have to wonder what would have happened if it had continued and no been canceled though, it would have come into direct competition against BSG

i'll admit it---i'm one of those sadsacks who checks whedonesque, fireflyfans, imdb, and the universal boards every month or so hoping for some glimmer of hope about the big damn sequel to serenity. what can i say- i'm obsessive about my interests (flight and space sims, open ended style fps, great scifi, and guitar). really wish that some studio would have the faith/sense to invest $25-35mill for a lower key serenity sequel, direct to dvd or scifi channel or whatever. it would eventually turn a profit.

A little update on some of the cast:
Summer Glau:
The Sarah Connor Chronicles are in trouble, the ratings are falling and there are some very bad rumors coming from the FOX execs, some say that the monday night slot is a death trap.
Nathan Fillion's Castle series, he is both a write/producer and one of its main actors. just got a Youtube trailer:

Speaking of Nathan Fillion:
This here vid is very funny (warning minor sexual reference).
Golden_Gonads was right...
Adam Baldwin:
Chuck is doing pretty good with high ratings, it seems that it will survive this season.
