Windows 10: October Update Issues.

Post by felter » Sat, 6. Oct 18, 22:12

It seems like the October windows 10 update had a few slight issues, the biggest one being reported by the early adopters was that it was deleting users files without asking them. Microsoft have pulled said update to investigate the issue. Microsoft have said:
We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating.
If you have checked for updates and believe you have an issue, please contact us directly at +1-800-MICROSOFT or find a local number in your area https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... ne-numbers.

If you have access to a different PC, please contact us at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus/ (link will vary according to country of origin).

If you have manually downloaded the Windows 10 October 2018 Update installation media, please don’t install it and wait until new media is available.

We will provide an update when we resume rolling out the Windows 10 October 2018 Update to customers.
This is why you should delay your updates, let somone else have the problems while you watch from a distance.

Makes a change - previously gone into a never ending restart loop. Thought my hardware had died, but last resort did Windows reinstall.
Everything worked perfectly ever since. About 2 weeks later saw issue that the recent Windows Update caused some users to experience never ending restarts...

Missing files is a minor thing in comparison

This is a very common issue when Win10 updates "go wrong." Win10 gets stuck in an infinite loop of reboots and troubleshooting menus. Why? Because it's a POS, that's why.... @$%@@%@@%

Oh, and the new update? The reason it borked up everyone systems was because of a simple command typo. Instead of "copy"ing all user-generated files and uploading them to Micro$oft for their massive data-hungry neckbeard moshpit, it "cut" all those files and uploaded them... Whoops. (Note: I can't verify this, but it's probably true, because they're a bunch of a$$hats...)

The October update trashed my account profile, leaving me unable to change any start setting and filled the start menu with junk. :(
Had to do a profile shuffle and put everything back as it was, the only casualty was a couple of hours of No Man's Sky, which I forgot to back up from the "\AppData\Roaming\Hellogames", a bit of a daft place to keep game saves.

So it turns out Microsoft were told and warned about the issue of files being deleted, 3 months ago, by the ones who do the insider program testing. So what did Microsoft do about it, did they investigate it, did they try and fix the problem, nope they did nothing, just released the update as is. Way to go Microsoft.

This just in - (Well, fairly recently, anyway. 10/11/18 in Freedom Date Format)

Microsoft Fixes Bug That Deleted Files

According to the article, the fix was not distributed at that time, four days ago. Something to do with "known duplicate folders" or something... Uh, hotlinked folders maybe? If that was so, it'd be stupid-crazy. Maybe, instead, it's if you want to keep a backup of a folder then Micro$oft considers that a bad thing or something, so they have an operation to find and destroy those? Or, at least to bludgeon them with a hammer and leave them for dead in an alley or something?
