Need help with ftp which dropped dead for no reason.

Post by apricotslice » Sat, 3. Nov 18, 06:45

Now thinking this is a general ftp problem, not a program problem. See last posts.

---------------------------------

My copy of ws_ftp v12 seems to have sh*t itself. It refuses to load any of my sites.

It was fine one day, refused to work the next. I reinstalled the program, it worked once, then stopped again.

No error messages. Just nothing.

Anyone have any idea what's going on with it?

Has ipswitch stopped supporting this version or something?

My copy is a fully paid up copy of the pro version.

Any help or comments welcome.

An easy test would be to install an alternative client, e.g. WinSCP, and see if that works. But it seems unlikely the client has just died - maybe your host has changed connection details, or maybe your ISP has blocked something. Are you using actual FTP, or a secure protocol?

You've checked to ensure that Windows firewall still trusts WS_FTP? Occasionally it forgets those sort of things after a Windows update.

I dont use windows firewall, and have checked Kaspersky.

But it turns out there was a block at the server end, as my ipad has been hammering a non-existent email address, and generating an IP block.

Background is, I changed hosts about a month ago, more or less abandoning the old setup, and creating everything from scratch on the new. I omitted creating the email address my ipad uses.

Now suddenly, the ipad is hammering the server for an email address which doesn't exist. IP block. No ftp.

Ipad emails turned off, block removed. Still no ftp.

No idea what is going on, its too late at night to figure anything else out now (almost 2am), so am leaving it to tomorrow and hoping a computer restart will solve whatever the issue is.

But any other things to check are welcome.

The one thing I dont understand is it wont open the old site either. Which makes me think ws_ftp is damaged.

I don't know if this might help. The downgrade to v12.4 was still being advised (unofficially) just a few months ago.

I'm using 12.3 apparently. maybe upgrading to 12.4 might help.

Edit: Where do I find the download for 12.4?

I would start here.

PS: I am not a user of it - your issue just intrigued me,

It appears that you download, update and get documentation for it by selecting the relevant product and version from within your personal Ipswitch account.

No joy with Ipswich. The only download available is the same file I already have. They wont admit there is a problem with the program, and even if there was, I dont have an up to date support agreement, so tough. Very mercenary.

Program is 8 years old now, time to let it die.

What do people recommend for ftp these days?

WinSCP is a decent free GUI-based client and my goto if I need to do much remote file management from a Windows box. (For quick transfers I usually use PuTTY's psftp or sftp from WSL, but you're probably not after command line clients.)

I gave up on WS_FTP years ago in favor of FileZilla - which has worked fine for me.

Filezilla doesn't work either. So maybe its not ws_ftp.

FTP just dropped dead from one day to the next. If its not the programs, what could it be?

Running win 8.1 with Kaspersky Internet Security.

Paused Kaspersky, still no FTP.

Its like ftp has been turned off inside windows itself.

Now, I wont rule out being hit by a virus sent by someone who hates me in a way even a paranoid person wouldn't notice.

What should I be looking for? eg. Anything in the registry I should be checking?

Edit: Just installed filezilla on my games computer, and connected it up using the settings I was using on my main one.
Everything works perfectly.
So something is stuffed on my main computer.

HELP!

I still think the most likely solution is that a firewall on your main computer is blocking the connection.

Identical install on both computers. With the exception the main computer is win 8.1, and the games computer is win 10. And the games computer doesn't get a lot of use these days. (But will when X4 comes out.)

But I'm open to suggestions to what might have changed on my main one. I've been through all the options I understand, but cant find anything stopping ftp.

So any suggestions for what to look for are welcome.

Well, you said you don't use Windows Firewall, so what do you use as a firewall? I think you mentioned Kaspersky? If that's what you're using as a firewall then you need to check the packet rules (since both FTP clients you've used are blocked) to see if FTP is shut down in there, and also ensure that your FTP clients are in the Application rules.

Without instructions, I dont know what I'm looking at.

But, with Kaspersky turned off, and Windows Firewall still turned off, neither program works.

So it seems more like a windows problem than a firewall problem.

I can't think of any Windows issue that would block FTP without also preventing other TCP/IP stuff like WWW from working, is the problem. I'm not familiar with Kaspersky so I can't give you step by step on how to disable its firewall or what-have-you (just disabling the anti-virus might not do that).
