So, a picture of a blackhole...nice

This will, indeed, be "cool." I assume it's Sagitarius A star, the SMBH at the center of our own galaxy. There is every indication that there is a SMBH (Super Massive Black Hole) there and things like plots of orbiting bodies effected by it, radiation, etc, point at that conclusion. But, it'd be cool to "see." We won't actually see "it" but whatever accreted matter and collisions there are around it or, perhaps, some severe lensing effects.
Found this on it: https://www.space.com/36360-black-hole- ... scope.html
So, they'll try to catch it against a bright background, maybe simulating a visual light image? (There some source articles in the link with more info.)

There's already been an observation using very long baseline interferometry done on Sagittarius A* supposed SMBH, albeit not as high resolution as the upcoming event horizon telescope study, but it reveals some interesting insight nonetheless, it shows that we don't see any of the hoped features of a SMBH, and that the object is more or less stellar in appearance according to this earlier study.
Link to prior paper released on Sag A*:
https://arxiv.org/pdf/1901.06226.pdf
Result of former study:
Top row left is what a simulated black hole looks like with an accretion disk to a close observer, top row right is what it would look like 26 thousand light years away using our observing techniques. The bottom row right is what we're actually observing and using the same models they infer that the original image would look like the bottom row left, the object doesn't look much like what the scientists at the EHT are hoping.

It's nice to see people getting excited by this. Then again, social media is one giant Fidget Spinner...

Who'd a thunk it, the BBC has had a team following / working with the team taking snaps of the black hole for the last two years, and they've made a programme about it.

And I am pretty sure the narrator is Dr Who, for those who care about such things .

Sweet! Looks like I'll have to wait until it comes to BBC-America, though. Even so, that's one thing I do love about the BBC - Documentaries. PBS, in the US, does them as well but they're not as well-funded.RegisterMe wrote: ↑Thu, 11.
