Half-Life: Alyx (so not HL:3)

So here I stumble over this trailer and I wonder why the internet has not shutdown yet.

I'm not as big of a fan of HL as many, but still its one of the better games I played over the years, so I wonder whats the take of those that are HL fanatics.

It being VR makes it interesting but since I dont have VR and dont plan to get it, I'll watch it from teh sidelines I guess and see if that opens the door for a real HL sequel.

I have VR kit and I'm pretty hyped. Unfortunately if it actually gets released on schedule it'll be a little while until I get a chance to play it.
It does look like it's very much built for the new controllers that come with the Index, whereas I have older Vive kit; I might need to consider an upgrade.

I'm guessing because it's VR. Fun though VR is, there are still relatively few people who have the necessary gear to really take advantage of it; even fewer if it's for a specific VR system.

Sadly, I won't be playing it whatever hardware it requires. I had enough trouble with motion sickness in HL just playing on a normal screen, so the chances of me being able to play in VR for more than a few minutes at a time are not good.

The important part about this news is the implication that Valve is working again on Half Life.

My guess is that HL VR, as already mentioned by CBJ, won't be played by a lot of people due to the lack of the necessary hardware.

Then again hopefully it will be bought a lot to show Valve we want another HL. :mrgreen:

Presumably they'll change the game mechanics to make the whole nausea thing less likely to happen. After all, if it worked exactly the same as a regular Half-Life game there wouldn't be any need to sell it as a VR-only title, because it would be perfectly playable without the VR gubbins.

If Valve has not caught up to the notion that people want a HL3 then they really need to look into their PR department as they might be asleep for a decade.
I also doubt they need any monetary signals, given they just made a full VR title. Even considering the reuse of stuff from older and other games.

I can't see how they can ever release Half Life3

A white male protagonist?!?!? It's the current year Valve, get woke...

But in all seriousness, HL1 & HL2 are very 'basic' games with the silent protagonist and no cutscenes, and the ability to carry 15 weapons.
I fear that any attempt to modernize the game will alienate the fanbase.

Ravenholm still gives me the creeps, I still wish I could avoid that level.

I like VR but the current options are gimmicky, I want at least a 4k display at 90hz and completely wireless, then it would feel more immersive, and I want a design like the PSVR which is extremely ergonomic not having a screen pressed against your face but the pressure distributed around your head like a crown. As far as I can tell, this desire is not currently possible, at least for the design like the new oculus which is like the PSVR, and the wireless technology is only available for the vive, but both don't have 4k@ 90hz

for those who wanna know why 4k, it's to drastically remove the 'screen door effect' and blurry small text that I notice very clearly in the oculus rift. If an option like this becomes available ever, i'd definitely enjoy my experience in VR again, especially for the new half life title and X-rebirth/Elite dangerous VR
