Solar Eclipse June 21
Unfortunately it won't be visible from Europe but folks here from more southern/eastern parts may get lucky (link).

Again? Didn't we have the end of the world already a few years back where some whackydo christian fringe group all committed suicide or something dumb like that?

If solar eclipses mean the end of the world then I think it's ended a few thousand times since the Maya were around...they're not actually all that uncommon!

Meh. An eclipse.
That's when it goes all dark, isn't it?
Nothing to see here.

You're right. If you really want to experience an eclipse, just close your eyes!

It was an attempt at humour. I guess I need practice
Anyhoo Perhaps it's a good thing that it won't be seen in Europe. Seems to me these things are better experienced through the internet.
Some folks will have decent digital cameras and no one should to look at eclipse with the naked eye because it can damage your eyes.

I agree. I remember once a friend of mine, when we were teens, happened to watch the eclipse with no protection and had to take medicaments for two weeks.brucewarren wrote: ↑Fri, 19. Jun 20, 16:19It was an attempt at humour. I guess I need practice

Remember the last solar eclipse back in the late nineties, a surreal experience .. All the birds stopped singing, a silence and cool darkness.. A true statement of natures power and human fragility.
Re: Solar Eclipse June 21
I remember the cool darkness (it was August) but not the birds stopping singing. Quite the opposite, the seagulls went absolutely batshit crazy!
I think we had 99% totality here? But still, pretty awesome - after that I could understand why some people plan their holidays around eclipse-chasing.
Re: Solar Eclipse June 21
There is one cool effect of an eclipse that you can really only experience in person, which is the revelation that the "dapples" of sunlight you see on a wall when the sun is shining through a tree or bush are actually images of the sun, created by dozens of impromptu pin-hole cameras formed in the gaps between the leaves--during a partial eclipse they all become crescents instead of the round spots of light we're used to.

Also so it is the Moon's distance that makes the halo bigger? Cool

Maybe this sounded sillier when asked)
I am just surprised the orbit is noticeably elliptical
