Comet 2020 F3 (NEOWISE)

Holy moly, it's a new thread in Off Topic... sound the alarm, alert the mods! :D

Anyone seen comet 2020 F3 (NEOWISE)? It's quite visible, even in a built up city like Bristol! Looking north north west, you can't miss it just above the horizon; it looks like star with a big wispy tail coming off it and is visible with the naked eye.

You'll be able to see it easily for most of July and the best time to see it is just before sunrise, but it's visible once the sun is mostly gone. I've seen it from 23:00 onwards. :)

I'd get my better camera on it, but we've just had our second baby and I think Mrs. Tycow would beat me if I vanished to go take photos of the sky! :D

I've been following this since its discovery end of March, waiting for it to become visible at dusk...been waiting for another great comet since Hale-Bopp in '97....and as expected, here comes a week of clouds to my NW horizon. :rant:

Went up the Bwlch mountain in South Wales Saturday night to see it. Took a few photos while I was up there, glad I did now as it's been wall to wall clouds since!

I got the reference :). Loved her books as a youngster, though maybe more the Crystal Singer series than Dragonriders.

I was actually referencing Game of Thrones. End of season 2, beginning of season 3, a red comet appeared at the moment 3 fossilized dragon eggs hatched. Though I wouldn't be surprised if that trope was used elsewhere.

Dragons is exactly what we miss in 2020. Alien dragons would be the jackpot.

It's actually called Comet 2020 F3, the NEOWISE bit is the device/team that spotted it. There's more than one comet with it appended to its name!

Got to see it, unfortunately through thin cloud and lots of atmosphere. Managed to spot it in the telescope viewfinder!

Indeed but even NASA are referring to this particular comet colloquially as just "NEOWISE". Their press releases are all seemingly doing it, but topic changed for the pedants. :P

I guess we need to be exact for SCIENCE! :D
