Jupiter in the sky
Have you guys in the Northern hemisphere seen Jupiter yet?
I am pretty sure the brightest thing that slowly moves across the sky on E - SE, is Jupiter, followed by a much more faint Saturn (I think).
Still I could be wrong, but looking at a couple charts, that sure looks like it. Never thought Jupiter can be that bright though!

the trick is to pick the right time of day

Yes, they are both visible.

It's amazing what you can see, isn't it! With a relatively cheap telescope you can see Jupiter and the four Galilean moons clearly. Saturn is quite nice too!fiksal wrote: ↑Fri, 7. Aug 20, 18:39Have you guys in the Northern hemisphere seen Jupiter yet?

Re: Jupiter in the sky
Do you have a suggestion for a good and cheap telescope for such things?

Re: Jupiter in the sky
A standard pair of binoculars should be sufficient for Jupiter's moons. Pretty sure I remember seeing them with the naked eye on one particularly clear, dark night.
I saw Saturn through a "proper" observatory 'scope once - classic small point with a ring; it looked like someone had put a sticker from a cereal packet on the lens.

There are oh so many options, just depends how much you want to spend? It is quite easy to do as well and you can see the Martian ice caps; cloud belts on Jupiter, divisions within the rings of Saturn; Uranus and Neptune, along with several moons of each. I assume you live in Canada, so do not know of any retailer over there, but I am fairly sure FLO will deliver worldwide.
This will show you all the above with a little effort: https://www.firstlightoptics.com/dobson ... scope.html
The more you spend, the easier and better it can get.
There are very many night time guides online too, but the best meteor shower is at its peak tonight and tomorrow. An example: https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/advi ... ky-august/
( I forget how to do a proper link thingy... )
Edit: Just to add that you need to be careful, it is very easy to spend more as you get hooked on the hobby. The start off eyepieces are not very good for instance and other extras are often needed.
Pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth

We're using a Celestron mirrored scope. We spotted Saturn and Jupiter recently. Mars is currently quite bright late in the night, too. At just the right time you can see all three - and Uranus is in the background too!
ETA: We have this one!

Re: Jupiter in the sky
Took the chance of a clear evening with moderately fair seeing a few weeks ago and captured both with my tiny setup:

I saw Mars rising up just a few days ago while on holiday from a great vantage point I sadly don't have from my home...now waiting for the October opposition and hoping it will be in view above the rooftops.
