X3 crash with updated AMD drivers

Post by Drengor » Sun, 30. Jun 19, 16:50

I just installed the latest AMD drivers for my AMD RX 580 ('cause fallout 76 stutters worse than anything I've ever seen, and they didn't help). So I switched back to X3, but it would crash before displaying the splash screen. This was all of my X3 installs (TC, AP, and a seperate LU install). Oddly enough, if I changed the graphics setting to go to my 2nd monitor, it would launch. (2nd monitor is lower res, and doesn't do freesync)

AMD wouldn't let me revert to my previous drivers (19.4.1), it would only allow install of 19.5.2, or 19.6.3. X3 was crashing with both of these versions. So I had to google until I found an old link to the 19.4.1 release notes on AMD's site. I'll put that link here in case someone else runs into this.

For reference, I'll paste the stack dump... I don't expect egosoft to even look at it though, driver changes a decade after release of their game is hardly their problem... :P

Hi, make sure you are not forcing an unscaled display resolution that X3 games do not support natively. I'm playing X3 games just fine on Win10 and an AMD RX 480 (8 GB) with drivers including 19.5.2 and 19.6.3 with display at 1920 x 1080.

If it isn't that and since all your X3 games (including the X3AP no-Steam exe) have stopped working at once, I would suspect that your may have had a graphics driver update malfunction that has not properly cleaned out old version vestiges that will not work with X3 games and the new driver app. I would try a clean uninstall of your current graphics driver and only then do a reinstall of the latest version.

Also make sure that your OS is fully updated too.

(BTW: Just for info in case it matters. I always disable the AMD *sound* input and output devices and drivers in Device Manager after every graphics driver update since I use the onboard sound chipset instead.)

Good luck.
