Editing SPK files? SPKExplorer errors

This has been frustrating me to no end.

From all the searching that Ive done, it appears I should be using the spkexplorer built into the plugin manager to extract spk files.

When I open the SPK file, I can view the xml files just fine.

But when I extract them, they turn into a garbled mess in notepad++ and are completely unviewable as normal xml files...so something is not working.

Also, using the command line spktool.exe always results in an error being thrown and the files do not extract.

How are people editing spk files?

NOTE: Im using cycrows plugin manager 1.47 and spk explorer 1.2

I use the Creator to edit .spk's.

Or right-click and Extract to Zip if I want a normal archive.
