Are reviews of any use?

Thinking about it more I think reviews are split between two types:

- personal reviews which consist of "I really like this because..." (e.g. my thread about Nier Automata), less useful to others as it will come down to personal preference

- critical reviews from fairly respectable sources which looks at games critically, though I find these tend to be over critical of the technical side of games and I personally never seek to read them
