@ Santi .. Initially mining copper is your friend, carrying heavy loads toughens you up plus it gives you a relatively risk free income ....

Dying a lot, last one at the hands of a herd of goats, my squad partner, Hobbs, is agonising, run out of medkits and none available in the hub trader, I am devastated, going back to an early save. Having lots of fun.

So far mining iron, copper I found was a bit too far and hence exposed. Really liking the game, Hobbs was badly wounded so I carried him all the way to the outpost bar where I dropped him, looks like they were going to pass the mop as a Ninja guardian quickly picked him up and chucked him outside. They are in my bad book now.

A really bitter sweet moment was a fairly big battle between different factions, while watching the fight, Hobbs and I decided to create a startup to trade in the boots of the deceased (more like the fainted, as dying really takes some time).

More than a dozen casualties, happy days, so we "sanitised" a couple of them (only one backpack) and happily went to sell the equipment, as we came back to keep doing our hard work, a column of serious looking men approached, slavers! Obviously we kept our distance, only to see how they all picked up the unconscious soldiers and walked away with our future loot. Heartbreaking moment.

I even felt remorse when I stole from the safe house for escaped slaves, especially when I read the dialogue ... Made a few errors but will start new game when map completed .. just a learning process.
Made the mistake of naming my gang of misfits so I now feel extra responsibility ... Feeding them is a bit of micro management task but I believe that is to be fixed in up coming patches ,, they have good appetites.

Birdtable I did the same and getting overly attached to my companions, I am up to 3 now.

On the other hand I got a couple of crashes with the game and still tweaking performance, the game is quite grindy but the kind of grind that I like. Nothing beats 10 solid minutes of transferring iron ore from the source to my guys backpacks.

I had a gang of 9,,, feeding them was grindy so they will have to double up the jobs and work harder next time .. :) Have fed and healed escaping slaves and hungry bandits but none have shown any appreciation by joining up.. ungrateful buggers.
Started a new game,, one of my farmers dropped dead of starvation while I was away exploring and a bull just vanished... I am sure there is a bug with food, they eat so quickly.
Going to make base down South West away from the Holy Order but I am having to live with the insulting Sheks whenever I go in the Bar.... :(

Edit .. Just in case .. you can automate a lot if you are going to stay in a location, takes loads of grind out.. just feeding them bit.

Edit @ Mightysword ...The biggest initial problem I had was slowing down my gameplay, it is a slow paced game and it is evident that it is still in Early Access .

As long as one person in your group has food, i believe they divvy it up between them automatically, which means you don't have to manually put food into their inventory.

I currently have about 35 people split between 4 squads and it seems to work well automated for me - i haven't played for a couple of weeks, but i'm itching to get back in!

@ ATTACK_HAMPSTER ..... Regarding food, does that mean I have to set up groups for feeding to be more automated,, last play through I just had a loose band of misfits ... Did to much stealing in the Holy Lands, when I went into a shop security was greatly evident/increased ... Handy to have a couple of the crew as diversionary targets...
Luckily I have had no crashes yet, so other than the learning curve and food being consumed so quickly everything running OK,,, maybe I should not expect them to live on a loaf of bread every few days, a diet richer in meat and vegetables possibly ... might be a little harsh in my treatment.

When i have a roving band of people i tend to use one of them as a sort of pack horse and shove all the food within their inventory which others will take from. For this to work well, you need to select somebody who is quite fast and can handle large weights, if you couple them with a traders back pack you can actually cram a lot in, but they are obviously not efficient at combat, but you can usually keep them back from the action.

Once you set up a small camp/farm, all you need to do is build a food storage bin and the NPCS will take food from the bin automatically once their hunger drops to around 60%. As for how much they eat, i am not sure if the nutrient level of food consumed has a direct effect on their levels of hunger, i will try and test it out this weekend.

I haven't tried stealing anything yet, but i want to set up a separate save for exploring and adventuring as i have only really concentrated on the colony management in this play through - can stealing be lucrative?

@ ATTACK_HAMPSTER ... Had the food storage bin but nobody appeared to be using it ....Had a selection of food.. bread, cooked veggies, dried meat and the meaty packs (cannot remember name) ... but not used... :(
Some appear to be starving when I check.. Seen a few mentions of this problem on other game discussions...
Stealing can be lucrative but the danger is to concentrate on this relatively easy income stream to the detriment of alternative gameplay,,, consequences do catch up with you which is as it should be.
I wonder if stolen food is not counted the same as purchased/produced food..?

Moving on ....
Finally mastering the nuances of the game .. (I know,, slow learner) ... after finding location called " Rebirth " It would be amiss not to call my character Otani .
So Otani the Creator is gathering his followers and has built his first major outpost on the Spider Plains ... getting prepared to build large farming complex NE of Last Stand,,, only 50% productivity but good enough... Food will be shipped via Bulls.... Still not been able to hire any Hives or Skeletons...will buy some Bonedogs to escort Bulls.

Awesome game. Used to set up training regimens. Rookies hit a dummy with a stick, then graduate to carrying stuff from the mines, then specialize, i think, was a while back. And after they're all trained up, they get to go outside the walls to farm because the farms didn't fit inside the walled-in compound. Then the patch with the new world came and broke my save and, i'll maybe get back to it one of these days.
