It could also be dangerous, destroying the "mystery" and the sort of "brooding doom" atmosphere the Xenon bring to the setting.mr.WHO wrote:Xenon gamestart and Xenon gameplay would be something fresh in X-Series.
The only barely seen "monster" is always scarier than the one that is fully revealed.
The "alien" in the movie "Alien" was more terrifying, more powerful, more dramatic than the "aliens" in the movie... "Aliens." In order to increase the threat, the drama and the risks, the traditional xenomorph had to be upstaged by a more powerful, more mysterious, "alien queen."
As a Xenon player, a player of a race that exemplifies the "alien menace" theme, what is "dramatic" enough to present a truly dramatic storyline or theme that would drive the atmosphere we'd expect when playing such a novel race/faction?
Que "The Borg" from Star Trek, particularly the more intimate view presented by the "Voyager" storyline. What did that finally need in order to upstage the oh-so-common-reveal of the Borg, there? "Species 8472."
I don't know that playing a Xenon character, if there could be such a thing, wouldn't ultimately do more harm than good. At the very least, in order to be a positive experience, there might have to be a "Species 8472" trope introduced. The Khaak don't qualify, either, as their theme of being "relatively harmless", in practical play pretty much holds true with the exception of very specific missions.
In fact, that may be a more interesting, less damaging, player-playable faction to explore. Perhaps a sort of backstory of the Khaak also being threatened by the Xenon or some other equally dramatic issue would be worth exploring. Likely, some internal, alien, sort of thing specific to their nature would be just as interesting to explore.
