Will your favorite corvette make a return in X4?
I was rewatching the December livestream and there is one point where Bernd mixes up the names of the Teladi Osprey and the Teladi Falcon.
That got me thinking - maybe the Osprey (and the other corvettes) are going to make a return in X4! I know that every ship will be flyable, but these weren't really included at all in Rebirth.
Some of my favorite memories from the X3 trilogy were flying the Centaur, Nemesis, Dragon and Osprey. These ships filled a role where they just started getting into capital ship territory, but were smaller, faster and obtainable much earlier due to their lower cost.
My favorite was always the centaur, but the springblossom's speed made it a close second. Leave a post below and tell us your favorite corvette and why.

Haven't seen the footage for X4's corvette ... but I'm hoping the fly model will be similar to X2's corvette rather than X3's version. Reason is because in X2, flying corvette feel different than flying a fighter. X3's corvette feels like they are just a super heavy fighter.
I pretty much skipped the M6 in X3, and the Centaur was my X2's favorite.

Very doubtful my favourite M6 will be included - it's a Hydra & no Borons in X4. Always found Hydra to be a nice compromise between speed, cargo capacity & shielding. Also very fond of the way it looked in X2. Interesting weapon options for the Hydra in that game too, generally went with front Ion-D & rear A-PSG.

We've definitely already seen game footage of a Corvette class/size ship with 1 docking port on the front having a fighter land/take off. I would love to see the Centaur again as that was my go-to ship for almost everything in X3 - flying the capital ships was just a bore so I always let the AI do that.
It was definitely something I missed in Rebirth, and as you say that class of ship was a really nice mid-point after getting started in the game but before being able to afford the ridiculous costs of capital ships.
Loved the utility of having a Centaur with lots of guns and turrets to deal with pirate threats without too much hassle, but also being able to undock a quick scout ship to fly somewhere like docking for a mission, or to explore or place down satellites.

In Rebirth we see some familiar X3 ship names used for ship models of different sizes and roles to the originals. Assuming that the ship models in X4 are all probably even newer designs (although I don't know that), I would suspect that any X3 ship names still used will apply to a completely new ship model and maybe even type.

Looking at Egosoft page X4 screenshots:

That Argon ship was identified as a bomber: https://youtu.be/Boxj2l5MkqY?t=1540
Here's the Teladi bomber that was also shown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Boxj2l5 ... .be&t=1488
Note the lack of landing pads for S ships.
This looks like the Teladi equivalent to that Paranid ship: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Boxj2l5 ... .be&t=2851
Here it is with a Teladi fighter landed on it for scale: https://youtu.be/Boxj2l5MkqY?t=2958
They haven't been confirmed as "corvette" class, but they appear to have similar functionality as corvettes from X2: larger than a fighter, smaller than a capital ship, large forward guns, small turrets, docking for a single small ship.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step in figuring out how to make it worse.
I hope m6s are back from X2, they were cool and the turrets were useful. I like to think of them as my end game ship as they were more or less the best ships in the game.
Tho for some reason I don't think we will have them in x4 I think the ship list is going to be very low as not many races and not many types per race in x4 due to them all having unique cockpits and interiors.

X2 M6 Nemesis was the one for me. Good speed, good shield, good weaponery. i never travel without her. Thanks to schock wave armaments, i was able to kill soo many Xenon K!
I really hope that all different set of ships will have their own flavour!
- Teladi Heavy shielding, but slow
- Split crazy speedy ship, but low on shield
- etc, etc...
Well, from X2 until terran conflict, i was definitly Paranid. Then terran, of course.

My personal favourite corvette was the Heavy Centaur, although if I wanted anything from the previous games to return as an easter egg, plot line, etc... would probably be one of the Terran capital ships.
(also the X-Shuttle but that would be to obvious)

Would love something like the Hyperion, this was my favorite ship in the custom start for Albion Prelude.

I was never really attached to any M6 ships in X3:TC. Basically, as a general rule (with exceptions) they were armed as heavy fighters, but steered worse than some frigates, featuring aspects of both fighters and capital ships by combining some the worst of both worlds. In most campaigns, I skipped over them directly to an M7.
The links in a previous post showing a Paranid and an Argon ship look "cartoon" colorful and otherwise uninspiring, not like something you'd expect to see as a military ship, MAYBE as a civilian design. I liked the cold, hard look of practicaly all of the capital ships in X3, even though the sweeping wings and projections on some looked ridiculously non-functional on a space-faring vessel. Many of the fighters were even more "wonky", with some seriously dysfunctional design aspects making them look extremely unrealistic.
Kindly remember the architectural quote: "Form Follows Function", and keep the ships looking like they'd actually be usable in space.

That's the thing - M6 ships need their own tactics & suitable equipment. Fly them as an excessively heavy fighter, or exceptionally light frigate & (IMO) bound to be disappointed. For me the guns on an M6 tended to be it's secondary armament - the big draw for me was a missile launcher with compatibility with a broad range of missiles & a big cargo hold for munitions (also drones, laser towers & other fun stuff). As a Tornado launch platform in particular the M6 class is unrivalled, though also wise to carry a selection of smalller missiles to deal with fighter escorts (some of which may be a little too nimble to take down efficiently with guns alone).Honved wrote:I was never really attached to any M6 ships in X3:TC. I really hope we don't see anything like the Springblossom again. Or the Spitfyre (I think? The Aldrin M3), for that matter. Both of those were way the hell too fast for their class, with few if any substantial drawbacks, and that made them too obvious of a correct choice for player combat ship as soon as accessible. Or if such things do exist, they need to be quite a bit more expensive than the rest of their class.
They could also have major weaknesses to compensate for the increase in one aspect. For example, Aldrin required high speed due to the huge sector size and large obstacle in the middle which blocked any direct path between the more distant points, so speed was a valid design choice. On the other hand, with practically no combat in the Aldrin system during the course of a century, shield and weapon generators would likely be considered secondary concerns. Having an M6 with M5 speed but M4 weapon and shield generators would make it a "one quick pass, then run away" kind of ship, good for trade but awful at sustained combat.Seanchaidh wrote:I really hope we don't see anything like the Springblossom again. There are numerous ways to balance one feature against others, to create a ship that's a fantastic "one trick pony", but not a game-breaker overall because of the balancing down sides. Cost alone is a poor balancer, because eventually cost becomes irrelevant.

I am definitely more interested in the Frigates than corvettes. Turrets ship autofiring is way more interesting to me than fighter and piloting to aim.
My favorite look go for the

Split dragon http://www.xdatabase.de/x3-reunion/comm ... ffe/17.jpg

I enjoyed the look of the lepton even if it was a transporter and not a fighting ship. https://www.alpha-orbital.com/ship/lepton
