1.4.03a Test version for those with Video Codec problems
If you are still having problems with your Video Codecs, please "try" this test version. Feedback would be appreciated.
Changes in this version:
- Change from using waveout to DirectSound for video playback
- In the Graphics Settings there is now an option "Use alternative video playback" to play back videps differently.
http://dl2.egosoft.com/download/x3/file ... .4.03a.exe
Warning! If you have the Steam version of the game, do NOT install this patch.

CBJ:
Thanks for at least trying something. Much appreciated.
I selected the alternatative video play thingy...
The patch rendered my game unusable, crashed after intro before video stuff even tried to play.
Black screen. No ability to alt tab, .. ctrl+alt+delete no response.
Had to reset entire system. So couldn't get any fault response.
Tried 3 times, same crash.
Best regards.

You can lead a horse to water ,.....
But you can't build a buffered phased pre-amp vortex filter with time displacement variant arrays ...... using a ball of string, 2 pencils and a cats tail.

I uninstalled the X3 completely, including deleting the program files games folder ( kept my saved games backed up elsewhere also )
Installed my Australian 1.2 Version from DVD - worked perfectly all video and sound glitches gone. Fine.
Upgraded to version 1.4 via the 1.0 to 1.4 162MB patch ~ still working all fine ... ( except my 1.4.03 save games will of course not load ) but game is working perfectly at this point.
I will now install the 1.4 to 1.4.03 patch 45.2 MB and see what happens.
Best regards

Just upgraded to the newest ATi 6.5 driver system for my Radeon 850XY Platinum ....
Re did all the previous tests and patches to no avail
bug still there.
Tell me, i have noticed ( as i am still playing the game on the latest patch again ) that the in sequence video of sector police checking my cargo for illegal goods etc ... works fine and smooth.
Does this mean my story line mission videos may be okay ? or do they use the same corrupted codecs to run their scripts as well?

got the new patch today...and it works....
I downloaded the new codecs today and run the setup for them, then I went into the game and played..everything seemed to work more smoothly..the cut scenes were taking 20 seconds or more to load...now less than 10..and the best news...the second mission in the storyline works now too..and is completed..ty egosoft for the help.

Re: 1.4.03a Test version for those with Video Codec problems
FWIW I've tried the test version - made no difference to performance on my PC that I could notice.CBJ wrote:- Change from using waveout to DirectSound for video playback
- In the Graphics Settings there is now an option "Use alternative video playback" to play back videps differently.
I'm running the game at the lowest possible settings with AQC on. The PC is a P4 2.1GHz, 1GB RAM, 128MB nVidia FX 5200 driver version 6.14.10.8185, Gigabyte 8IRXP motherboard, Windows XP Pro SP2, C drive = 40GB Seagate 7200RPM drive (8GB free), game installed on IBM 40GB Deskstar 7200rpm drive via Promise RAID controller (9GB free), sound via onboard SB PCI128.
Yes, I know the CPU and video card are the main issues, but others have got past mission 2 with lower spec computers. I really wish I could find what is slowing down my PC!

Re: 1.4.03a Test version for those with Video Codec problems
No, there won't be. If you read the very first post in this thread you will see that this patch is to try to solve a very specific problem with video codecs, and has nothing to do with general performance.the_harper wrote:FWIW I've tried the test version - made no difference to performance on my PC that I could notice.

OK, so the alternate playback mode is only for video cutscenes not 3D.CBJ wrote:No, there won't be. So is the card. I can't imagine that nVidia would have done much to improve the performance of a card which is several years old. On the other hand I imagine they're doing a lot of work on the drivers for the current crop. But hey - you're right, they're a year old. I could try the current one, what the heck.xeon_1 wrote:you alway's could update your gfx card drivers they are ancient

You know what's slowing down your PC. I wonder which video card has lower specs and can still run X3. Trash that damn thing as you won't enjoy the game otherwise.the_harper wrote:Yes, I know the CPU and video card are the main issues, but others have got past mission 2 with lower spec computers. Do you still need feedback?
Downloaded this over the weekend as I'd restarted with 1.4.03 and was having problems with the video. I'd been playing for a while with this version and hadn't noticed any problems, but then I probably hadn't seen any video clips for a while (as I'd finished the plot). I noticed the problem after installing WMP11 but it might have existed before.
All is fine with the 'alternative playback' option checked in the graphics settings.

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but, using this latest test patch, when I load my game, (clean install, ect..) for about 10-20 seconds after entering the game (sitting in the station) My mouse is unresposive. After around 10-20 second there is a very light sorta screen blink (looks as if some gamma or something is kicking in) and then the mouse responds.
Only happens when the game is first loaded up and getting into game, seems to be fine afterwards.
This is using the latest nVidia Drivers v.91.31
It did not do this with the official 1.4.03 patch, only happens with this 1.4.03a update.
Anyone else? Everything on my sys is updated as I always update everything.
I had thought it was a mod perhaps at first, but I removed the mods/game, (cleaned registry of keys as well as deleted X3 folder after uninstall) but no luck.
I may try the Beta nVidia 91.33 drivers or try an older set 84.xx to see if it is actually the driver and not the game, but thought I would post it up incase someone else is experiencing it as well. The new nVidai drivers so not seem to be as good on performance as precious versions however. I will give various drivers a go later on after I fix some food and coffee.
** EDIT **
I uninstalled the game, reinstalled, used the offical patch 1.4.03 (did not update to this test version)
Reinstalled my mods (same ones as before). I had tried several driver versions from nVidia, but have installed the latest official nVidia release again.
The problem no longer exists.

Steam Version...
I was getting problems with the briefing videos so I gave this patch a shot.
However, I have the steam version of the game, and this patch has activated Starforce but I have no disc. So, now the game will not run....
1) Put a warning somewhere so others don't get the same problem.
2) Never ever use starforce!
3) Is there any way I can back this patch out or am I going to have leave my computer for 12 hours to download the game again?
Thanks.
