It works exactly the same as capturing a ship the normal way does, but you don't have to get out of your ship first. e.g. approach to within a short distance (it's about 100m or less for SOS) of a ship whose pilot has bailed out and the quickmenu will have an option "Claim" on it.

Thus, not a very useful item. To have one in personal ship is a crime.

Besides, there is the special feeling when you do the spacewalk while a very angry Xenon J is on your tail. :D

You could also download the add-on script that allows you to buy a legal version of the SOS for the cool sum of 6.2M credits. It's range is also a bit bigger.
