No Real Time Shadows in X3?

I have the steam versions of X2, and X3. I noticed that while x2 has real time shadows, X3 does not. Its not a big deal since x3 is a much better looking game. I just want to know if this is by design, or an issue with my system. I use a GF-6600gt 256meg. All Vid, sound, DX, and MB drivers up to date. I found no threads disussing this. Is X3 supposed to have shadows, or not?

It's by design.
