Okay,
I thought I'd start experimenting with ship formations a little more, especially as I've seen some posts complaining about wingmen and escourts.
So I decided to take three M6's (one piloted by myself) these happened to be the best M6 I could find which in my oppinion is the Centaur. I set the two M6's to protect my M6, then added two M3's ships as protection for each M6 as shown in the diagram:

Too my surprise this formation worked so much better than having all the ships protect me. The M6's became a very useful and formiddble foe indeed, and I could go through pirate alley (which I could never do with all these ships before) much easier without a loss.
Has this been built into X3?, is it that were not using formations and protective cover correctly? has anyone else tried this?
Excellent fun had all round

great idea im sure people have tried it though...sorry. the only problem i found with it which caused me to abandon the idea a while ago was that in large battles my ships would run into eachother.
other than the ships colliding i couldnt find any other flaws so congratulations.

You know you have had enough when you dock at a pirate base and toss a couple bucks at the monitor...

might i suggest Fight Command MKIII?
recently developed in the scripting forum, it includes evasion protocols for ships allowing them to avoid each other and incoming fire very effectively.
It's 1 mil a pop to install on a ship though, so best reserved for wingmen only, or the super rich

The most efficient tactic that I have used is moggy2's idea:
Group of say five ships. Leader and escorts. 'Formation' X or Xdelta. Part of escorts run "Protect leader" and the other half runs "Attack target of leader".
What you tell the group leader to do is up to you. "Attack all enemies" is just fine. When it picks a target, the attack_same escorts join it, so there is consentration of fire. If the leader is hit, the protecting escorts will react, while the attack_same finish the original target. Ultimately they will switch to attack the attacker of leader too, since it will be the target of the leader.
moggy2's Group Management System makes setting up groups like that a breeze.
The only ship causing collision in furballs involving such groups has been my ship.
