Non responsive mouse during play.

Post by El_Cdt » Sat, 16. Jun 07, 17:35

I´m a long time player of X2 and X3, and i was actually a member here for quite a while, but went absent for a few months and totally forgot my login data, so i had to make a new one. The problem i´m having has been around since i first played X3, and i had expected that it was fixed in the latest patches, but i´m having it again. I loose all response from my mouse, and i can´t steer my ship. If i open a menu, the problem goes away, and i can move again, but as soon as i close the menu i loose all mouse movement again. I can still fire my weapons, but i cannot steer, as the ship only moves a few inches. And the wierdest thing is, this happens only on a select number of systems, and only when i am facing a certain direction. To fix it i would have to jump out to a "functional" system, save, and exit the game. Then restart again and hope the problem had gone away, wich doesn´t always work. It is really very annoying, and i remember posting for help a while back (with the old account), and had no reply. How do i fix this?
Currently patched to 2.0.02 with Bala Gi´s bonus pack, no mods, all drivers up to date, using this gear:
Win XP SP2 fully updated.
XFX GForce 7900 GS
Pentium 4 @ 3200ghz
1gb of RAM.

I really need help here. Anyone have a clue to what´s going on, and how to fix this?

X3 Problem.

Post by arnak » Sat, 16. Jun 07, 19:16

Hi,

Unfortunately this issue has arisen before with no clear resolution I'm afraid.

The last response was to try this tweaking guide.

I hope it helps or someone else has a better answer.

Yeah, i remember the issue never got a proper fix, back when i first asked about it. I thought it had been adressed on the latest patches, but it seems not. I guess it´s such a wierd bug that not even the devs know what causes it, or how to fix it. Since it doesn´t happen all that often, i guess i can work around it. It is still very annoying, though.

I confirm the bug - exactly the same happens for me...
Could anyone confirm that the problem manifests itself only in the sectors that have the nebula effect.

When I start the game in Argon Prime it runs smooth as silk. No problems with the mouse. If I enter The Hole I get the mouse problem.

My computer:
MB: Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R
RAM: PDP Patriot Dual LLK 2x 1GB DDR2 EPP 800MHz CL4
CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E6600
Graphics card: GeForce 8800 GTS EVGA 640MB
PSU: Seasonic S12-II 500

Note that the effect DOES NOT occur when playing on my notebook:
CPU: Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
Graphics card: Radeon 9000.

Egosoft - could you investigate the problem PLEASE?

the NVIDIA tweakguide mentioned above, specifies this type of problem..
TweakGuide wrote:Triple Buffering: This setting is covered in detail on this page of the Gamer's Graphics & Display Settings Guide. If set to On, this setting allows your overall performance to improve when Vertical Synchronization (VSync) is enabled in games. Therefore if you want to enable VSync - whether in the in-game settings or in the Nvidia Control Panel, it is recommended you enable Triple Buffering as well. However note that using Triple Buffering may cause problems for graphics cards with lower Video RAM, so disable this option if you’re experiencing problems such as mouse lag in games. Note further that this option only works for OpenGL games at the moment, so to force Triple Buffering in Direct3D games (which is the majority of recent games), see the Advanced Tweaking section.
you can use the preset settings facility in the NVIDIA control panel - X3: The Reunion is already included in the list..
what basic settings do you have on your card - and what settings do you play the game at..??
- the whole universe is running in BETA mode - we're working on it.. beep..!! :D

I don´t think it´s related to triple buffering, because it is not a mouse lag, per se. Mouse lag would manifest itself by a delay in mouse input, but you would still be able to move. The problem i´m having is diferent, it´s as if the mouse cursor were blocked, and couldn´t move. If it were triple buffering related, opening a menu would have no effect at all, but in my game opening a menu will restore mouse movement, at least untill i close it again. And, i have Triple buffering disabled as default, in my nvidia control panel.
Also, this is happening in systems without nebulas, so it has to be something else. It is happening a lot in Heretic´s End, wich is a very empty sector, with no nebulas or asteroids, only one station, and just a couple ships around (i´m playing a no-plot game, so there are no terrans there).
I think it´s code related, some function in certain sectores is wreaking havoc with the mouse drivers. But just wich function that is exactlly, that´s the one million dollar question.

Given that only a handful of people out of thousands playing the game are having this problem, it is far more likely to be a hardware or system configuration issue than a problem with the game itself.

One thing that has come up in the past is that processing of input from USB mice occasionally gets a low priority when processor load is high (as it almost always is in this game). Are you both using USB mice? And if so can you try a PS/2 mouse, either directly or using a USB-PS/2 converter?

CBJ, first of all thank you for a fast answer!

I am using an ordinary PS/2 mouse, without any USB converter plugged in the PS/2 port of my motherboard.

Now I have an exact way of repeating the problem:
1) Make sure that the automatic levelling of your ship is kept ON [as it is by default] (I have forgotten the exact name - if you do not understand me, please write and I will look it up)
2) Start a new game and from the Argon Prime go to The Hole sector taking the shortest route
3) In The Hole using your mouse make a circle as fast as possible a few times
4) Try to move your ship in any direction using the mouse. The response is as if something was blocking the movement
5) Try the same with the keyboard - no problems
6) Go to in-game menu (the one with the starmap, messages, options etc.)
7) Try to move the mouse in exactly the same way as in 4) - no problems

Note that the problem is NOT in the performance of the game, which is excellent on GeForce 8800. I know what I am talking about as I started playing on Radeon 9000 and know what a SERIOUS LAGGING is :).

NOW THE IMPORTANT PART THAT NEEDS CONFIRMATION FROM ALL PERSONS HAVING THE PROBLEM (I do not know whether it is my imagination only or it really SOLVES it).
Try to DISABLE automatic levelling of the ship. I mean the thing that is ON by default, available in the game options that allows your ship to rotate automatically by itself. I have forgotten the exact name - search for it in the in-game options (the ones where you redefine the keyboard shortcuts, it is in another menu) and you will find it without any problems.

I don´t use that levelling thing. Infact i didn´t even know it existed. My ship will keep flying in the same direction and pitch/yaw that i last leave it.
And my mouse is a Microsoft USB optical mouse, but connected to the normal mouse port using a USB to PS/2 convertor.
Note that this problem does not happen often, at least on my game. It does happen when i save on certain sectors, and exit the game. When i then restart, the problem arises as soon as i leave the station, or as soon as i try to move (in-flight save point situations).
If it were a hardware conflict, the problem would be constant, but it is not. And opening a menu should have no effect, but it does. Nor does the CPU load has any effect, as this happens both on heavy load sectors and light load sectors (i.e Herectics End with no terrans). It´s the opposite, really, with the problem manifesting itself on sectors with very little traffic or nebulas and asteroids.
I´ve also noticed that sometimes targeting a diferent ship or factory would lessen the problem.
Finally, i´ve noticed that lowering my SETA multiplier to 7x instead of 10x has also fixed it, as i´ve had to other problems since the change. It´s worth a try.

Hi,

I have the same problem with the mouse. In the past when i was played X3 in my old pc i didn't have that problem. Now i decided to play once again the game in my new pc. I have this problem with the mouse. But the strange thing is that the problem with the mouse only appears in the sectors with abandon ships. I dont want to spoil the game, so those who have played the game they known which sectors i mean. When i enter these sectors for some minutes everything seems fine, but after a while i cant use my mouse any more. I have to move my ship with the arrow keys. I can claim and enter the abandon ship, but with no mouse support. When i get out from these sectors everything is back to normal.

Any ideas or solutions.
My PC: m/b asus p5b, cpu intel 6400, gpu 8800gts

As requested at the top of the forum, please post a DXDiag report rather than a minimal description of your system and state what version of the game you are running and whether you have any scripts or mods installed.

Hi Ebon,

It would be an idea to patch up to 2.0.2.

So, as i said before the mouse problem appears only in sectors with abandond ships. When i am go out from these sectors everything is back to normal.
I upgrade my game from version 1.4.03 to 2.0.02 , i still have the problem.
And now some really funny things.
I have a Microsoft optical USB mouse connected to my pc with a USB to PS/2 converter. When i connect my mouse in a USB port , guess what, the problem is still there, but not so intense. I can move my ship with my mouse but not as normal. Also now (when i have my mouse connected in a USB port) when i have something locked in my target ( a ship, station, jump gate) everything is back to normal. Something that it was not happend when i have my mouse connected in the PS/2 port.
I don't know what is going on , but i guess it isn't some hardware problem. Probably it is something wrong with some drivers.

Your graphics drivers are a beta version and you should probably try installing the latest non-beta ones before chasing any other issues.

Do you have any other USB devices plugged in, and have you tried removing them?

I know that my graphics drivers are a beta version. I'm just downloading the latest non-beta now.

For other USB devices, i have connected in my computer a printer. No, i didn't try to remove it. But i will try when i'm going home.
