Why won't my wingmen follow me when I jump to a different sector?

I've made sure they all have the jumpdrive and adequate energy cells but they won't follow, well they do but they try to fly their way to me instead of jumping.

Do they need navigational software mk3 or something?

Ships will only follow you through a jump if you use the navigation - > jump to sector command(s). If you use Shift-J or the menu command, they don't know that you jumped.

even then its sometimes iffy.

And most important: energy cells! If your wingmen don´t have enough they also can´t jump!
