Ecliptic Projector - what the hell does it do??

Sorry guys if i bother u with so many questions... but i love that game and i just wanna become good,ya know... so, here's my final question, promised ;)

What does the Ecliptic Projector do?? I installed one in my ship, but nothing changed... so, what is it good for?

It displays the 2d plane between gates. Can make navigation easier.
