Just keep checking. Trust me, you'll know if you missed the auction, because the boards will get filled with posts about how it's over. Once that thing starts, you'll never, ever be rid of it.

Even if you win the auction, you'll be assaulted by endless posts about how you won it.

Right, but if you do lose the auction, it doesn't just go away. You'll get spammed by posts about how the auction is over, and such-and-such (I believe Burn-It Industries) won it.

So simply not seeing the posts about it doesn't mean you lost it. You'll know you lost it when you see a million posts about it being over.

Any chance I can gain a sector another way?

In the unmodded game, nope.

With the help of mods, you could always use a sector takeover script, and take it by force.

I never got that script to work, but regardless, too much talking about scripts tends to make mods banish threads to dark places.

Although I'll admit, I've driven myself crazier looking for the donation BBS missions than anything else I've done in X3. Luckily, they're repeatable, so once you find one with the race you want, you can donate 20 million in one sitting and be good to go.
