forward smoke trail on SETA?

I've noticed when I'm SETA'ing around in my little Disco Hauler, I often see what looks like a plume of smoke shooting out in front of me. What is that? Is the SETA confusing the viewpoint and throwing my own engine trail ahead of me?

Not like it's a big deal or anything, I'm just curious.
