I have the reason for one of the SETA slowdowns

Post by Baleur » Fri, 7. Nov 08, 14:21

As ive said before, i'll say it again even though Cycrow told me "no." the last time i suggested this as the reason..
The reason for the slowdowns after leaving it on SETA x10 overnight is due to the collision avoidance of npc ships..

Every single time i use SETA overnight, it sits at 70fps when i go to bed, and at 1fps when i come back, even with SETA turned off i get less than 2fps.

And what is the one consistent thing that i ALWAYS see in the sector i SETA'd in? (unless its an empty no-trade sector)
A huge clump of freighters and escorts by one of the gates, failing to get through due to them all being buisy avoiding eachother, causing the slowdown.

http://img508.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... 130gf1.jpg

Jumping out of the sector and playing for an hour or so, or even just SETA'ing it away, those previously clogged freighters can now be seen POURING through the gate on the connected sector, almost like a flood of traders FINALLY being let loose..

This may even tie in with the overall slowdowns, since the fps rarely goes back up to the previous level, no matter how much time has passed.

Seriously, do something about this. You have the reason, it is reproducable 100%, so whats up?
And dont ask me for a savegame, because the 1fps slowdown clears up when reloading, its just generally slow like in any other persons savegame.
But the screenshot tells the story, in that clump there are over 100 ships, and dont forget that it affects the economy too, since those traders are stuck.
Btw those traders were NOT in the sector before using SETA, those are all the traders that ever entered the sector, and got stuck. Its basically like a big sector of glue, trapping ships and preventing trade.

Cycrow is right if he says that collision detection doesn't cause this. Why? Because when you go to another sector without all those ships your framerate doesn't get back to normal (that's what you say at least).
You should know that OOS there is no collision detection, so I doubt that causes a permanent slow down (even if it's just for one session).
It also doesn't explain why your framerate is good again if you reload.

My guess is that everything goes in to the swapfile on your HDD (because of high memory usage after such a long time), and just not everything gets moved back to the ram properly. But that's just all my thoughts, I could very well be wrong  :D

Edit: a good way to test your theory is if someone could write a script that turns of collision detection for everything, and then run SETA again to see if the same problem occurs or not ;)

Now that should be easy to remedy...just go SETA idle somewhere where no trafic ever passes.

You're right. It should be that easy.

It isn't. I generally make it a point to do my overnight SETA far, far away from everything else, since I don't want some over-enthusiastic would-be-cop to scan me and cancel SETA.

It doesn't help SETA performance at all--it still makes everything very VERY choppy.

Oh. And the performance patch 1.2.1 did bupkis. Squat. Diddly. Nada. Nil. Null. Void. Zero. Zip...

Here's my DXDiag.

You should know that OOS there is no collision detection, so I doubt that causes a permanent slow down (even if it's just for one session).
It also doesn't explain why your framerate is good again if you reload.
Well no, i said that if i go OOS and wait a while, it clears up.
In the same sector i SETA'd in, i get 1fps.
Jumping to another sector and i get about 15fps or so.
(this is with seta turned off obviously)

However, it seems my savegame is now truly fracked up, it seems it is permanently at a lower fps now.. I usually get at least 10fps at SETA (when travelling around, normal gameplay), now i get 1fps, still..
Its actually unplayable for me now, as others have reported before me.
And as always, starting a new game, no matter how much havoc i cause in the first hour, it always stays at almost twice the fps i get from my 30+ hour savegame..

How can it NOT have anything to do with collision detection, if there is a HUGE fps drop, and a HUGE clump of +100 freighters near-crashing into eachother for all eternity, right by a gate?
That just keeps trapping ships, unless i jump OOS so they can pass through everything as normal?

There is a clear issue here, it causes an instant in-system fps drop, and it causes a longer duration general fps drop. If its not an issue with the collision detection, then its something with the AI. I just know it has something to do with this, otherwise i would;

A: Not have a clump of 100 ships by a gate in the system i SETA'd in.
B: Not have lost 90% of my framerate :P

Sounds to me a lot more likely to be a result of your extended seta sessions.

Try not doing that as much.

Well thats like saying, dont play the game so much :P
But whatever, the fps did climb back to nice levels after about an hour. But its still an issue.

You're not playing the game tho are you. You've stuck it on seta and gone to bed or whatever.

And as you say, after an hour it goes back to normal so the cause of the problem seems to be directly attributable to your extended seta. If you weren't doing it you wouldn't be seeing a problem.

To be honest I can't see why you'ld even want to be doing it. Sure in X3:R where the UT was king an overnight seta would earn you millions but the way the combat missions are broke at the moment you can earn 300 million or so in a single mission so what's the point?

No. That's like saying the current workaround for the Terran campaign bug in M148 is sufficient and that Egosoft should just move on.

What you're saying is irrelevant - you have your playstyle, we have ours. It's obvious that this is a clearcut situation of a game feature not performing as intended. Saying it's being abused or whatever is just silly.

This has happened to me more times than I can count, to be fair some of it occured in X3R, but it's happened enough times in X3TC to freak me out. It's at the point now where I prepare for it beforehand and save right before bed. There's a pretty good chance that the next morning I'll have to load from that save because my FPS is screwed yet again. So far though in TC it has been pretty good about recovering. I'm just nervous it will eventually stick.

EDIT: For the record, just last night as I went to bed, I heard my ship being scanned. I rolled over and decided not to care because I was too tired. When I woke up my FPS was gone again, so that's like 6 hours of normal gametime with about 20 minutes of SETA beforehand. Sounds like pretty normal game usage to me.

No, the M148 bug should be fixed and as bugs go that's one that I can easily accept being missed given the circumstances required to cause it.

Seta does work as intended. Get from point A to point B in a condensed timespan. It was not intended to be stuck on and left. It is abusing a feature and Egosoft were themselves aware of the potential for this kind of abuse which is why they coded the game to penalise your combat rank for extended use of it.

If you're nervous that you're causing potential damage to your savegames then surely the sensible move would be to stop doing it? If it does mess something up are you planning to blame Egosoft for the choice you made?

You're assuming the game designers intended you to to spend hours on end in the same sector (on SETA or otherwise). Persnally, I think that's unlikely to be the case, particularly given the rank degredation you suffer for extended idle.

However, if you want to play the game like that it's up to you (although just scripting the money in seems easier). What I don't get is; if the problem appears to be a result of a pile-up of ships in the sector you're in, so why not try a sector with few or no ships to sleep in, as Geggo suggested? Or at least no gates.

You're not talking sense. Whether or not the designers want you to play the game a certain way, this is still a bug. There are other, clearer ways to have someone not run SETA for hours. I can name a few without trying. 1) Don't include SETA. 2) Have a time limit. 3) Have patrols come investigate you no matter where you are to scan you and turn it off.

SETA worked without damaging FPS irreparably in X3, therefore it should work the same in X3:TC.

If the game designers hadn't wanted you to be able to do it, the program wouldn't -let- you do it.

Spending hours in the same sector: What are sector traders? The designers wrote a script to do exactly that. The game's designed to be open-ended. If the game had a script that allowed the player to insert his thumb up his rectum, that'd be by design as well.

1. That would do it but the universe being quite large that would severely slow down gameplay. Some sectors can take several minutes to cross realtime. Seta exists for gameplay reasons.

2. There is a time limit. Egosoft hard-coded one to hurt your ranking specifically to discourage this kind of action.

3. They do, and people attempt to circumvent this by parking themselves in the most obscure place they can find or leaving a weight on the J key.

Just because the program allows you to do something does not mean that was the way the programmers planned it. By your argument Egosoft purposefully coding the game to negatively affect those who abuse seta clearly indicates that it is NOT something the designers wanted you to be doing.

The OP is claiming that his play-style is having the observed affect and that when he doesn't engage in the activity it plays as normal. Therefore the solution to the problem in his case is clearly to stop abusing a game mechanic.

I think the developers would have put in another way of preventing SETA over usage, instead of the slowdowns. I mean, it might not be intended for long usage, but it should still work. If they really want to stop you they would think of something else, like SlainteMaith said.

@ Baleur: You are kinda saying 2 things here 1) If I go OOS nothing is going on 2) I now permanently have low fps. So unless you are spending days on end in one sector you should not have low fps because of the collision detection.
You also say that if you go to another sector you have to wait a while. OOS there is no collision detection, so your fps should be good instantly when going to anther sector.
That said the programming could be to blame, I think that the heavy usage of SETA queues up a huge load of commands. They all need to be executed, but that could take a while. That could explain why your fps takes a while to return to normal when you go to another sector.

Anyway did you try to SETA in an empty sector, like Geggo said?

Which bit makes no sense to you? You think rank decay is a bug?
Spending hours in the same sector: What are sector traders? The designers wrote a script to do exactly that.
Which is relevant how, exactly? That's not the player ship.

Filth Hounds of Hades.
Which bit makes no sense to you? You think rank decay is a bug?
Rank Decay is obviously not a bug. And that's fine. I'll gladly suffer rank degradation with combat. My universe traders will keep in tight with all the other races. Just because the game allows weapons doesn't mean I have to use them. Or does that mean I'm not playing the game as the developers intend?
Which is relevant how, exactly? That's not the player ship.
It's a ship doing exactly what you described.
If you're unwilling to try the suggested work-around, then that's up to you.
From what I understand, the suggested work-around is "Don't Use SETA overnight." This is silly.

Here's the thing: I'll try to say this again, since you didn't seem to get it the first time.
Whether the developers want you to use SETA overnight or not is irrelevant; as it is now the program slows down when you use it for extended periods of time. The program also slows down if you have a marathon play-session and only use SETA to hasten travel from A to B.
This is a bug. This is why testers 'Soak Test' games-- (leaving them running when they go home) to see if they're stable enough still to be running (and at the same speed) when they come back the next day.

You imply that these FPS slowdowns are not only intended by the developers--or at the very least feel they're not responsible for fixing them--and that someone who would want to leave SETA on overnight is immoral because they're cheating somehow and not playing the same way you are. I leave things running on SETA overnight precisely because I do not want to cheat in money--but I also don't feel I should have to babysit my traders. (And as it turns out, I have to babysit them often enough what with pirates, other traders underselling, and general randomness)

If this is indeed what you're saying, I think this is nonsense, and doesn't help the developers at all to address the problems that many people here are outlining.

Here's a similar scenario using your logic: Someone has a bug while doing something non-plot related. The developers made a plot for the game. The person wasn't doing anything relating to the plot, therefore it's the player's fault and the developers aren't responsible for fixing the bug because the player wasn't playing the game as the developers intended.

See? I can be silly too.

My point was that rank decay would seem to indicate the designers didn't want the player spending long periods of time doing nothing. Otherwise why did they implement it?

Nowhere have I said you can't play the game however you want to. Quite the opposite, in fact.
Which is relevant how, exactly? That's not the player ship.
It's a ship doing exactly what you described.
No, it's not.

Perhaps I wasn't clear, but the issue Baleur is describing is a result of the player ship spending a lot of time in one sector - that's nothing to do with sector traders or anything else that's happening OOS.
If you're unwilling to try the suggested work-around, then that's up to you.
From what I understand, the suggested work-around is "Don't Use SETA overnight." This is silly.
For the third time (or fifth, if you count the other two posts suggesting it):
if the problem appears to be a result of a pile-up of ships in the sector you're in, so why not try a sector with few or no ships to sleep in, as Geggo suggested? Or at least no gates.

You imply that these FPS slowdowns are not only intended by the developers--or at the very least feel they're not responsible for fixing them--and that someone who would want to leave SETA on overnight is immoral because they're cheating somehow and not playing the same way you are.
Where did I imply that?
I leave things running on SETA overnight precisely because I do not want to cheat in money--but I also don't feel I should have to babysit my traders. (And as it turns out, I have to babysit them often enough what with pirates, other traders underselling, and general randomness)
Feel free, as I already said.
If this is indeed what you're saying, I think this is nonsense, and doesn't help the developers at all to address the problems that many people here are outlining.
Again, I'm not sure where you've got the impression I'm saying fps slowdowns are deliberate.
Frankly, I've no idea what you mean by this, but I've never said anything of the sort.

Can we not argue over semantics like who is using what logic. This is a topic worth talking about but its getting personal and thats dumb.

One thing about rank decay: it makes total sense that, after a long period of time without combat, your combat skills would go down. The EXACT SAME THING happens when you go for a long period without trading. It makes perfect real-world sense and THAT is the intended purpose of the mechanic. It serves as a balancing mechanism, which also happens to apply to the extended SETA stuff. The developers probably realize this, and I think we can all agree that it is a good side-effect of this gameplay mechanic.

If it were the main intention, it would still be a dumb design decision on Egosoft's part. What a vague and uninformative warning that would be.

Its also safe to say that the FPS drop is NOT INTENDED by the deveopers. We seem to all agree on that one as well. It's an imperfection in the engine, and is therefore a bug.

This really is a playstyle issue. I work a lot and don't have time to be playing X3 all the time so when I get a chance to, I like to have options available, not finding myself inside a Nova.
