The worth of wingmen.

Post by Turricanion » Sun, 19. Apr 09, 02:16

I just bought a nova raider, and decked it out. i still have a fully decked out elite. Is it worth making him a wingman, or will he just crash into a station and die, or will he just get chopped to bits by the enemy and be a waste of cash?

Are wingmen useful at all?

They aren't bad if you give them missiles (preferably ones w/o a large explosion radius ), but don't take them into massively overwhelming situations as they will get themselves killed much easier than a decent player will. Helps to have more than one as well.

are they much improved from X3:R in TC?

I noticed in X3:R when i docked at a station, wingmen would crash into it, when i flew past an asteroid, wingmen would crash into it.

I'd sell it. An old Elite can be a nice wad of cash or a wingman with a life expectancy of 10 seconds. I really don't like trusting anything smaller than a corvette with the simple-minded AI in a fight.

Elite is slower than your Nova. Hard to have a wing that doesn't fly at similar speeds...

You know, the whole reason for me to grind through and finish certain plots in the game is to get a fleet of Vidars as wingmen. That is because I think the most important property a wingmen can have is shields. Then comes speed and firepower.

Get Falcon Haulers then. 200MJ shield, 132 speed, PBG up front and a PRG turret. They have enough shields to safely give them Thunderbolts to use when they run out of energy.

If you're ok with using some scripts (that were bonus packed in the last edition) it's a very good idea to give your wingmen Mosquito Missile Defence, especially if you're using lighter wingmen without rear turrets (like the Solano, which makes for a much better wing than the Elite, and I think it's cheaper actually...).

If you want wingmen, check out fighter drones... they've been underestimated by lots of people since X2 :)

Cheap too; you can pick them up back up when you're finished, or command them to dock at a ship with a dock on it (so I'm told- I have never tried this).
