Wingmen problem in "patrol" missions X3TC

Has anyone else come across this problem??

When i tell my wing of ships to protect me, they do a pretty good job of it if i start to get shot up a bit.

Except in "Patrol" missions where they will happily just kick back and guzzle spacefuel between the (non existent) pilots!!

Can anyone tell me why this happens as it only seems to be on the patrol missions??

for patrol missions, tell them to 'protect me' and go on the patrol urself.

I always do the patrol missions myself but they just fly around as if nothing happens and only fire back when they get attacked themselves.

They are permanently on "Protect Me" so this shouldnt be happening.

Anyone have any ideas????
