Use M8s with their barrage ability to pound capital ships and stations into dust from extreme range. They only fit tomahawk heavy missiles. Some can mount guns in turrets but you should never get them close enough to the enemy to use those guns.

When using the barrage command, instead of typing in, for example, 6 barrages to launch 6x8 missiles, do a single barrage 6 times with a few seconds pause between, to space out your missiles so they don't all go up together if one gets hit.

Generally, don't buy an M8 if you've just barely started. Makes a good addition to a fleet, as long as you already have a fleet somewhere.

They are good for assasination missiles too, saves getting dirty. Their missiles can take out almost anything, but they have trouble hitting smaller things so are saved for capital ships. The missiles cost a bit of money & it is easiest to make your own complex to supply them so they are usually saved until late game.
