How to change the soundtrack
This tutorial will show you how to change the music that plays in a particular sector (no modding experience required!)
1. First you need the track you want to replace the ES standard with in .mp3 format, if the track you want isnt in .mp3 format, any reasonable audio editing/recording program will convert it.
[ external image ]
2. Once you have the file in the right format, use the list above to find out the 5-digit number of the soundtrack you want to replace,as a rough guide 00019 to 00040 and 06201 to 08106 are the sector music files, 01001 to 01005 are the combat music files, and the rest are plot-related. for this tutorial i'm going to replace the president's end soundtrack (number 06021) with a track from Jeff Wayne's Music Version of The War Of The Worlds, which you can listen to here
[ external image ]
3. Next navigate to the soundtrack folder, that can normaly be found at C:>Program Files>EGOSOFT> X3 Terran Conflict > Soundtrack. Locate the original file and Rename/Delete it (I recomend renaming it so you can go back to the old version)
[ external image ]
4. Copy your replacment file into the directory and re-name it to the 5-digit number you found out earlier.
[ external image ]
5. Close all open windows and run the game, the track you chose should now play.
[ external image ]
note: Combat music is chosen at random, so if you want to hear your own music, replace all the files

Going through the soundtracks trying to find the Missile Alert effect. Figured I'd contribute.
Many of the ones labeled "Empty" sound like engine noises.
00014 - Manual Docking theme
02001 to 02006 - These appear to be the noises factories make when you fly past them.
08211 - Former spacewalk boarding music. Is it still?
08213 - This is an Unknown Sector theme, I think. Reminds me of the area around Maelstrom/Gaian Star, though I'm not sure.
08234 to 08236 - Sounds of the marines as they progress through the ship
08255 - Unknown Sector theme
08403 - Main title theme
08501 - This is "desolate" sector background music...pirate sectors?
08502 - Terran sector background music...occurs somewhere within the first mission of the Terran plot.
08504 - "Known" sector music, I think. Don't remember where.
08505 - Oh, god, I hate this track...it's the Unfocussed Jumpdrive sector music...it burns!
08506 - Aldrin sector background music
08507 - Terran sector background music
08508 - Terran sector background music

:b Thanks for these descriptions. I went through and replaced all the sector and battle music with Battlestar Galactica music today and it was well worth it!
I think the default volume on most of the X3 tracks is quite high, so it would take some remixing to make a smooth mix of both X3 and 'other' music, but a straight swap out is working brilliantly. Thanks again!

An audio related question for the game
In the Soundtrack folder does anyone know which number the Ore Belt music is? I found the game over music, fight music, and almost all the sector songs. Except for Ore belt. And I'd really like to know which one it was.
Reason being is I'm planning to change the audio in certain sectors. As well as the fight music. Nothing wrong with it. I'd just like to hear Master of Puppets when I'm killing pirates.

Thanks.
"earth" is just the title of the track, it was plot-related music in x3:Rclevider wrote: 08511 - Earth (not 08218 as listed in the OP)

Quite right. How confusing. I hadn't noticed the quotation marks or the track title in Winamp when I was checking it. I've modified my post accordingly.superbun wrote:"earth" is just the title of the track, it was plot-related music in x3:Rclevider wrote: 08511 - Earth (not 08218 as listed in the OP)

Erm... This list has a few holes still...
*pulls up the soundtrack folder*
OK, from a cursory glance I can say the following:
8302 - Hub Sector
8503 - Kuiper Belt (Don't get me started on Betty's mispronunciation!)
8507 - Saturn, Jupiter (I particularly like that one. They chose well for that.)
It seems this was the previous list for X3R. I'm including that in case anyone else ends up here as well. This thread is the top hit from google on this topic currently.
A brief comparison seems to indicate they didn't change much with X3TC. (Surprise, surprise...) With X3TC I'm recognizing a bunch of stuff from XTM though. 8212 for instance I believe was XTM's song for Queen's Retribution or somewhere down there. It seems they included the XTM stuff but didn't use all of it?
