PSG effectiveness

Post by Neillmcm » Wed, 7. Apr 10, 12:26

Hi, For the sake of change I'm trying some new ships and weapons early in my 2nd game.
I bought a Demios and fitted it with ISR on the mains and thought I'd try the PSG's on the left and right, (top + bottom Flak). I've never used PSG and have yet to take the Demios into a fight (probably just don't want to scratch its shinny new body work) appart from a bit of test firing from the turret.
So.... from the test fire I was curious about the area effect, is it only good against figthers, as an alternative against Flak? or does it have some bite against M6s upwards?

The only references I found on the forum related to X2, where it was considered a little overpowered.

So anyone have any experience, cheers. N.

It does have an area effect. Actually, it seems that it does more damage against larger targets due to that effect.

The PSG is incredibly lethal against fighter groups. It doesn't kill quite as quickly as flak, but since it takes out the whole squadron at once rather than one by one, that's a definite plus!

It does bite hard against larger targets, because due to the way the area effect works, larger targets take more damage, and it can savage M6s and occasionally M7s. Range isn't too great though (though bigger than the AI thinks it is) which will be a problem especially against other capital ships.

I have several Deimos with PSG's fitted.
They are a great AoE weapon.
I found they are particularly good for Khaak Clusters.
Like the ones in Op FF escort missions.

only 1 problem with psg, friendly fire..... keep all friendles at aleast 3km range or else....
yes it cab take out cap ships and stations.
using demios means you can surround yourself with area of death leaving you free to fire main guns. especially in off missions, but not very good for escourt.

i just leave ai demios in fighter suppression role while taking out carriers/clusters.

Recently I witnessed an Argon invasion in Paranid Prime, the local defenseforces (Zeus etc) got whipped up pretty fast, also the passing through patrol got hit hard, save for one ship, an Agamemnon that cleansed Argon like vermin (and did it's best to kill my PC as well)

The ship seemed to have a full PSG loadout, and was very lethal. Cleaned up the invading forces by itself. So it's great in sector, however, OOS it is a crappy weapon due to how OOS works.

Odysseus + Kha'ak Sector 926 = lot's of fun.

Front / Left / Right = 8x IBL (or PPC or IC)
Back = Mixed IBL / PSG
Up/Down = PSG

Back is especially effective, PSGs fire earlier because of the IBLs longer range.
