Reassigning mouse controls in classic mode

Hi, I'm currently pulling my hair out trying to get my xbox 360 right thumb stick working to a decent level in game. I think I've found a decent solution but I will probably be shot down because it involved changing the axis that the mouse controls on the ingame classic (Shift+N) control mode.

I want the horizontal mouse movement to control the roll of the ship.
I want the vertical movement to control the throttle setting on the ship.

Is this possible? can I mod the game this way?

I've had this game sat on my shelf until I found a decent controller to play it, now I have one I have had zero luck and zero fun so far out of the game. Please help me to enjoy the X universe, pretty please?
