Frame Rate Issues During Combat With Khaak (Kyons)

Post by tileguy » Sun, 10. Oct 10, 22:50

I seem to be having serious FPS issues when in combat, especially when khaak ships are spouting kyons at me. I normally have around 80-100 FPS even in heavily populated areas, the problem seems to be when more than 10 ships fire at me at once, the FPS drops to around 2! ie. slidshow effect. This happens with any race in any sector with any weapons, it's REALLY bad with kyons. Any ideas guys...

Yup they do that. That seems to be one of the Kha'ak's tactics for fighting you. Best bet is to just use a capital ship and let the turrets take care of everything.

I'm not sure it's so much to do with tactics tbh. I can run other games (Crysis, F1 2010) without any sign of choppy performance. There's most certainly something wrong here.

I was being sarcastic... It's a known bug/issue in the game. Doesn't matter how fast or slow your computer is. It's been reported a few times here already in the past and I don't think any threads about it here have ever been solved.

Ah, no worries The-Gizmo, it's a bit frustrating that a game as great as this can suffer such bad coding. I can only hope the Devs read and heed the MANY threads regarding this issue. Until such time I will continue to play X3TC even if it's only 95% complete.

Bad coding? I think not. However, if Microsoft had continued supporting its own D3D SDK, like would have been much better in the X-U.

X3:R does not suffer from this problem at all... so I can only imagine it's in the X3TC coding.

Guys, if it goes down to 2 fps from 80 it's not just a normal performance dip. Neither X3R or TC has such a problem for most people.

Tileguy, this may be a long shot as this only affected me in old versions of TC, but if you have textures set to high try turning it down to medium. I have no idea what that has to do with combat or weapons, but what used to happen to me was that with high textures the game ran nigh-unplayably slow every time more than a few ships were shooting.

Ill give that a go Elucca. I've just read a thread regarding something Shootist mentioned about the sound codecs Microdaft abandoned, it seems these or this is most likely to blame. Oh well, can't win 'em all. :)
Apparently running Vista x64 could be a factor too.

OK, just tried X3TC with everything on medium and then lowest settings - still no joy, everything is super-smooth until anything with kyons or plasma bursts fires at me

I've heard that buying a sound card rather than using on-board ones sometimes helps, might get me wallet out at the weekend!

oh, good. I noticed on one of your threads you had a similar problem to mine, did you get it sorted at all?

It's obviously something CPU related since this is such a CPU heavy game, and the fact that the game barely touches my HD 4850's potential. This game has too many issues with codecs. I myself have an issue with X3 on XP not playing any music whatsoever, but other game sounds work just fine. I'm too lazy to even attempt to figure out which codec is the culprit. Music got too repetitive anyways.

Thanks for the reply The-Gizmo. I've noticed the game doesn't use all my HD's potential either. I think you've got the best theory so far! It's a pity the game isn't totally unplayable tbh, it'll give me an excuse not to play it all the time, and give my ears a break from the missus.

I've got your same issues as well tileguy, and it couldn't be solved no matter what I tried.
For me framerate drops consistently both in the presence of player-owned complexes and during fights (weapon impacts, as you mentioned).

Also, yes, one of the the official versions here seems to be that the problem lies with microsoft libraries or somesuch they used to build the game engine (in which case the issues should however be the same for everyone...).

The only way I found to gain some fps was to use mods, if you don't mind it: here you'll find a small collection. Personally, I found the "Improved Combat Frame Rate" and the "tubeless_complex_mod" (for complexes) to have a noticeable impact on framerate. "Combat Mod 3" also seems to help, substituting sounds and effects for many weapons, but I think it also modifies some weapons values, so be advised.

Of course, if individual modders and scripters were able to improve performance for many players with their admirable, yet necessarily limited, efforts, it's hard to understand why the same was not done at an official level by the same guys who actually coded the game the way it is...

Indeed, hence my comment regarding coding in my first post. Thanks for the detailed reply de la serna, I'm not one for being ***modified*** right now (although the idea of playing the game without so much slideslow effect does appeal!) however it seems from a few threads I've read about this issue adding more memory (beyond 6gb) MAY help.

Moving to more than 6GB will have severely diminished returns compared to moving from 4GB to 6GB, as the game cannot address more than 4GB and your otherwise idle O/S uses only about 1GB. You would be able to run more background tasks but the improvement gained from diminished virtual memory access will have all but vanished.
