Joystick affecting Keyboard Input issues resolved

Post by hkessock » Mon, 18. Oct 10, 14:54

Alan Phipps (thanks!) provided a link to an FAQ entry relating to quick keyboard key toggling linked to joysticks that use switches or toggles that appear to the game to be buttons that are always depressed.

So, if your keyboard acts strangely, either rapidly toggling keys or keys that simply do not function as expected (such as F1 not working) then check your joystick for a toggle or switch that is in the 'on' position (on my Saitek AV8R it was the 'Mode' toggle and it was set to 'A', setting to 'OFF' resolved the issue as far as I can tell.)

The issue appears to stem from a use of DirectInput immediate mode polling data instead of buffered data.

If you cannot set the switch or toggle to a non-reporting state, you can disable individual joystick 'buttons' via the method described in the FAQ entry:

Despite what the FAQ states, this is not a DirectX problem, it is a design flaw in the joystick handling code of the X series, but hopefully for anyone else who has this problem it can be worked around.
