It always annoyed me that exploration in X relies more on what you see rather than navigational instruments. I realize it's impossibe to implement EVE-like scanning/exploration but surely something can be done to enhance non-combat scanning in balanced fashion. The new long range scanner could work as follows.
1. Once activated drains ship's shields to 0
2. Requires ship to be out of combat and remain stationary
3. Scanner begins sweeping the sector. Entering combat or moving cancels the process.
4. A short scrabble/anagram minigame based on standard text menus.
5. If player solves the minigame before scanning completes all stationary objects in the sector are revealed (with exception of pirate bases as they're supposed to be hidden).
I don't have x-modding experience myself so I'm not sure if it's even possible. Opinions ?
