Help with a graphics problem

[siddham]

Having a serious graphics problem…with X2 and X3 and other new games – not with XBtF and older games. Graphics corrupting…little blue squares, like flecks, and the game freezes. Cant get beyond main menu.
I can use my desktop. Watch a movie, go online etc…but cannot run X2 or X3.
I have installed the latest Nvidia drivers.
I have run the tests in dxdiag and all ok.

I suspect it is a hardware problem – but really I don’t know.
Any advice?
Is there any utility that can test a graphics card?

I'd say that your video card is either overheating or damaged. Make sure that the GPU fan is rotating and the heatsink is free of dust.

In the past the video card monitoring software was an integral part of the GeForce driver, but now you have to download it separately:

You may install it to check the fan speed and the GPU temperature.

As for the test utility, try furmark or 3dmark, but i suppose they'll fail to run as well, given the fact that you can't launch a game.

I did recently remove and replace a sound card and also removed a wireless card; and I used a vacuum clearer to remove some dust from the interior of the case. I wonder did I damage something!!

Yesterday I could not use the machine at all. Not even boot to the desktop. Today I booted in safe mode and uninstalled the nvidia card.
I also took it out and use a vacuum cleaner to remove some dust - maybe not enough. After that I was able to boot to the desktop, but could not play any newer games. So there was an improvement but games seemed to put the card over the edge. I did notice the fan was moving.

Perhaps I should take it out again and make sure its clean.

How can I tell if the problem is in the card or on the motherboard?

The presence of screen artifacts almost certainly points to the video card being the culprit, but it's quite possible that it's just a contact problem. Make sure that the 6-PIN 12V power cable is still attached to the card. Also you may unplug the card from the mobo and wipe the PCI-E interface with contact cleaning fluid.

Vacuum cleaners generate a lot of static electricity. Using them on delicate electronics is not a particularly good idea, though to be fair I used to do so until I found this out and never, to my knowledge, damaged anything.

How do you clean your computer now?

update: I was unable to get the system with the card to function sufficiently to install and run the ntools properly. I have decided to buy a new graphics card. Fingers crossed the card is the problem.

For cleaning dust, you want something like A compressed air cleaner. Don't know where you are from, but I imagine any local computer/techy store near you would have them.

I like to do it monthly (but sometimes lazy). The most important areas to keep clean are the fans (Main Fan, GPU, CPU). Getting the dust off will keep them cooler, perhaps getting a longer life span from the hardware (and since your fans are working less, the computer is quieter).

Don't want to enter a touchy subject, but it may be NVidia driver problems. I know this is true for my computer, which has an NVidia CPU and ATI GPU. No NVidia supported drivers work correctly. The issue is actually the way the CPU initiates the network components (which to this day, I can not "disable"). I had to use a driver from this site: Link. I don't know if it helps you though...

Update on my graphics problem.

It was the graphics card that was malfunctioning.
I got a new card – a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770.
On paper this card is more powerful than my damaged Geforce 8800 GTX
But on my system it is definitely not superior.

It is awful on X2. For instance, the asteroids on the main menu screen and in-game are just black blobs if I have bumpmaps on; no texture no detail; just black blobs. I have to have shadows off and bumpmaps off to see anything clearly!

edit: where I should have bumpmap textures I have a mat black teflon-like effect!

So why is this?
Has anyone any advice.

AFAIK it's a problem with the latest ATI drivers that cannot be fixed. Take a look in X2 tech support forum; there are several threads with complains about this very issue.

On the bright side, X3 uses different engine and should be OK.

You are correct again: X3 runs ok.

I re-installed the older driver from the disk that came with the card but still cannot use bumpmaps in X2. Basically cannot play X2 with it.

I had just gotten started in X2 ...then this.
Hmmm not sure what next.

On an older moan of mine: while testing the card in X3 I was once again struck by the awful sound quality of the computer voice...at least on my system. Radically different eq settings on different sections of the name of a ship, for instance, and clicks and pops all over the place.

First, update your sound driver - it predates the Roman empire itself. There are many different X-Fi models, so make sure to pick the correct one:

Second, you have Cyberlink DVD suite installed, which is a well known source of grief for X3 players. Remove it and then reinstall Windows Media Player 11 to restore the order in your codecs. If you are watching movies on your PC, grab a modern player with built-in codecs (my personal favorite is VLC).

I have been through all the hoops with drivers - the Creative site tells me I have the latest for my card; and I have tried uninstalling Cyberlink and re-installing Media player; DShowviewer and DSFManager etc etc and no joy. So I reinstalled Cyberlink. It doesnt make any difference.
I have been unable to eliminate the clicks so far even though I have following all the advice I got here.
Part of the problem is also that the computer voice puts together anouncements using sound files recorded at different times under different eq and mic settings - which is really just poor sound production; nothing to do with my hardware.
For now I am playing X2 - or will be - and the sound production is much better than X3; there are also fewer clicks and pops.

Strangely enough, they sound just fine on my rig. But i'm listening mostly death metal, so i'm prolly already deaf.

Somehow i've missed the other topic about your sound issues and that's why i've repeated the standard recitation about incompatible codecs and old drivers. Sorry that i couldn't help any further.

Well death metal would probably blunt your sensitivity alright (tbh that music is painful for me to hear at all). But as to the game X3 I know that once I am in the game I will get used to the sound. For now I got a new card and have started X2 - again. Your input was great ivak - thanks
