OOS Patrol M6 - Worth it?

Post by (/\)arped » Sun, 24. Jul 11, 14:34

Tried googling the ever-asked best OOS M6 question, but only found topics way out of date (maybe I just got unlucky). Nonetheless, those all pointed towards a big fat no to M6 OOS usage, mainly (it seemed) due to potentially bugged OOS combat at the time.

Given we're now at version 3.1, what's the verdict? Is there a decent M6 to use? Or is an M4/M3 combo better?

My personal plan was to go for an M6/M3/M4 combination (numbers to be decided) the choice of which would depend mainly on getting the speeds vaguely similar (obviously the M6 would have to be a bit of a compromise, but the smaller the difference between M6 and M4, the better), but perhaps the extra cash* would be better spent on just a larger M3/M4 squad?

* Actually to be more specific, I'm really considering my 'end-game' scenario. So this choice would either start me producing more 200MJ shields and more M6 class weaponry, or doubling fighter weapons and shields production. Hmm.

As a side note, I think this is the first topic I've posted in this forum since X2, man it's been awhile.

Probably better waiting until you can get an M7 for patrols. PBG armed pirates will eat your M6, M3 and M4s for breakfast. You may have a chance if you use an M6+ with escorts but will still probably lose some of them. I usually use Aggamemnon and Deimos for patrols.

I have been having this exact problem.....

I was using Skirons (OTAS M6) and Eclipses (Argon Heavy M3) for patrolling farnham's legend to protect my weed/booze plex and it seemed any old pirate could come along and make mincemeat of them. Their weapons are way too deadly OOS.

M7's and up are definitely the way to go, just kitting out my brand new shiny boreas for the job, hmmmm yummy =]

Actually, it's HEPT that's dangerous. PBG is actually less dangerous OOS. Like PSG, it doesn't get the multi-hit damage that makes it so dangerous.

Also the single missile that may be fired by each ship in a combat turn OOS always instantly hits and does full damage - and Pirates often carry high yield missiles like Hammerheads ...

I've noticed missiles like hornets are GREAT for oos.

but yeah, load up anything that will be fighting in OOS with lots of high powered missiles.

you don't have to worry about them missing seems to be the verdict; so dummy high powered rockets are the way to go.

Fighter wings are pretty effective vs weaker enemies OOS. When added M6, they become much more powerful. Real problem is attrition and Q patrols. Losses are imminent, which is bad. That means - bigger the ship, the better. Pair of Osakas for example, would suffer NO attrition ; ) Very safe investment.
