YAKI Ryu useful or not?
i recently picked one of these ships up recently. now my plan was to use it as a deep range explorer carrier.
the way i play the game, ill launch out a squad of kestrels purely to load the sectors onto my UniMap, after they are there, i would jump in my small carrier (i used to use a cerberus) but ive decided this time round to try it wth the Ryu.
reason for thinking this way is that
1. i can carry a heck of a lot of ECells. so really this thing can be dispatched and never really need to "refuel" the way i use it (20kECells loaded before dispatching)
2. it can carry 12 fighters (i use 5 Elites for defending the carrier itself and have 4 Eclipse for scanning roids and 3 Discoverer Haulers for scouting the sectors)
3. it can have a forward battery or 4 IBL's in a TL class ship. that should be easily capible of dealing with M6's (not that im trying to use it as a combat ship) but say your roid scanner is being chased back to your carrier by a pirate M6, this thing would deal with them in 3-5 volley's of the forward battery.
my intention is to have the ship loaded with missiles (wasps etc) and it could double as a missile spammer by using its fighter compliment as well this could give really good support to a boreas for example. as an Anti Fighter platform
but do you think this ship is worth spending the money on?

By "pick up", do you mean you bought it or you 'borrowed' it?
It depends if the extra IBLs are important to you- looking at the stats, the Split Elephant is superior in nearly every way- it's cheaper, faster, better acceleration and agility, better shielded with a superior shield generator, stronger hull and laser generator, and it can carry 2 more fighters. The only things it loses out on is slightly less cargo capacity.

well i thought the elephant held 14 fighters... again maybe im wrong on that. another difference between the Ryu and the Elephant is i dont think you can fit IBL's on the front and you can only have a volley of 2 max where as the Ryu can give a volley of 4 from the front.
plus the fact ill probably get a noose round my neck for.... SPLIT SHIPS ARE UGLY!!!

I used a Ryu as my mobile base/poor mans carrier in my Yaki themed game. It's a good solid ship, and will do nicely as a platform for your burgeoning fighter fleet.

A) Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. B) The Ryu is a very solid ship for what you want, with the additional ability to jump out, collect a Station and jump back to drop it should you pick up a build mission or two while you're out and about.
The forward IBL's are great, as are the side mounted FAA's. keep in mind though, that the FAA's are mounted at the rear of the ship, and thus you'll have to keep moving if something shows up.
I did the Treasure Hunt bit in Akeela's Beacon with a Ryu, and some supporting fighters. So it's surprisingly adept at dealing with groups of fighters.
In addition to all the other advantages, if you're not friends with the Yaki, you can steal them all day long, or until you run out of boarding pods and almost never run out of targets to steal.

Hmm... well so long as you're piloting the TL or are nearby, I think the Ryu will serve fine as a mobile base of sorts. Too bad it can't mount typhoon missiles as that would really give it some long ranged bite.

I like the Ryu very much, along with the Chokaro.
The Ryu is a good all-round utility ship that can serve many purposes.
Used with Mammoths during complex building is good.Mammoths pick up the stations while the Ryu picks up the CCKs.
Chokaro is a good trader and carrier with reasonable battle use too.
Using Chokaros with fighters, and Ryus with fighters, combined with an assortment of firepower, they work together very well in my games if I need to battle.

For the uses you listed ConCorDian, the Ryu will work fine. Bonus points for using a Yaki ship.
Stat wise, it is a very good TL, especially in non-traditional rolls like carrier/combat/drone duties. The Split Elephant is slightly better imop for those duties, because of its higher shielding, faster speed, cheaper price tag, higher laser energy and regen, and 14 hanger space. However, if the Elephant did not exist, I would say Ryu is the best TL for all duties other than complex building. And there is nothing wrong with flavor and changing things up.
The Ryu gets 2k more cargo space over the Elephant (which makes it a bit better at building complexes than Elephant as well), and the ability to mount IBL's on it's front turret and Cluster Flak on the sides. Since the laser battery on a TL is not fantastic, you only want to make it capable of taking down any fighers, and the occasional corvette, that wanders into its way. IBL's on the front and flak on the sides should accomplish this, IS or OOS.
On my Elephant, i went with PBE's on the front and back, and IBL's on the sides, but it's all up to flavor.

I've been meaning to play a game where I use a TL as a mobile base, before I move up to an M6. Previously I'd been planning to use an Elephant (possibly with the mercenary leader start from vanilla malt gamestarts), but after reading this I'm wondering if a Ryu would work better in that role.
Thanks for giving me something to ponder.

Interestingly, the Ryu is the only TL with a 4 place mount. And that it's both in the front and capable of mounting the IBL is certainly useful. It's as though they knew they weren't giving the Yaki an M6, so they awesomed up the Ryu to compensate.

well reason i went for it was because i have done a new argon patriot start, and with that i seem to have max rep with the yaki (i can already purchse the yaki M1/M2 let alone the TL. so i didn't have any major rep grind to get somewhere.
another yaki ship i like is the Tenjin M3
its decent for speed (182m/s) got 9 forward weapons with a laser energy of 8250... also 2 turrets which with their placement gives damned good missile defence (i reckon they cover bout 85-90 percent of the arc which on a fighter is excellent) fits all commonwealth fighter weapons (bar ID) and fits pretty much all the expected missiles. then there is the fact that it is simply sexy!!!
i dont really treat it as an M3+ but more as just a standard M3. my personal M3 fighter is a Tenjin (CCD Dart)
must admit ive had a good 10 hours real time playing with the Ryu and have to confess ive been more impressed with the Ryu than most TL's.... infact id go as far as saying for all its stats dont match up to the Elephant ive been far more impressed with the Ryu. dear god i just realised im becoming a major Yaki fan!!!

Try going to the next sector and buying an IBL cannon. You will have a major disappointment Yaki sell you all their ships as soon as you get docking rights. You might even have no docking rights in the next sector which is considered "core", but if you can dock on the shipyard in the border sector, you can purchase all ships there.ConCorDian wrote:well reason i went for it was because i have done a new argon patriot start, and with that i seem to have max rep with the yaki (i can already purchse the yaki M1/M2 let alone the TL. so i didn't have any major rep grind to get somewhere.

i have a Mistral SF docked at each IBL forge in Weavers Tempest buying up the IBL's (they have either 5-6 each already) and i have setup a small complex in Weavers Tempest to supply the required Ore, Delaxian Wheat and Ecells the sector needs, as well as having traders ferrying the resources about....
I stay corrected then In my Lost Lar game I can buy any of the ships but I cannot even dock on stations in Weaver's Tempest. Time to buy a TL and build them some stations.ConCorDian wrote:i have a Mistral SF docked at each IBL forge in Weavers Tempest buying up the IBL's (they have either 5-6 each already) and i have setup a small complex in Weavers Tempest to supply the required Ore, Delaxian Wheat and Ecells the sector needs, as well as having traders ferrying the resources about....

i must admit im finding the Yaki great allies, ive even got into a fight outwith yaki space and a nice yaki Tenjin helped me!! i know thats probably a bit random but screw it.
one question i do have though.... i have a pirate base in senators badlands which is spawning patrols every now and again... problem is those patrols are attacking me. i seem to be fine destroying the fighters but im wanting to take down the base itself. but with Yaki ships docking at it every now and again will this damage my yaki rep if i destroy the base?

Ryu and Elephant are my favourite Light Carrier would-be ships.
Inexpensive and great cargo and fighter carrying capacity, plus they are the most used TL types in my own Fleet.
Buy at least half a dozen of each and outfit them for various duties.
