[TC] Massive FPS drops and generally poor FPS/Stuttering as the game goes on

Post by Gotis » Wed, 21. Dec 11, 06:12

Hi, so I've been playing the game for a long time, these issue's have always been present, I just tried to ignore them.
Maybe my computer is just not good enough, although I believe the problem is more than a lack of speed, especially since I have read other posts where users get better performance with similar or slower systems.

So since this post is a huge wall of text and I can't format nicely at all.
TLDR: Game gets significantly slower the longer it goes on, combat causes massive FPS drops and stuttering, FAA especially. Decent FPS only last about 10h, then issues start. Detailed issues below.

There is late game IS complex lag, but that's not what I take issue with. No tubes helps there.

C2D Q6600 2.4Ghz @ 3.6 (400x9) Air
4x2GB 4-4-4-12 800Mhz GSkill
MSI P35 Plat
Nvidia 275 GTX
Win 7 x64

Newest nvidia drivers, recent-ish Realtek Audio from their site, updated several times in an attempt to fix this over the years. All windows updates. Dxdiag at bottom. Game is played from a 2x500GB in raid 0 volume. Split 250/700. Playing from either partition makes no difference.

I did some experimenting to try and find exactly what causes the problems for me, which I have pasted below.

Clean install, New start, argon pat, TC3.1, Flying time ~40min at end of testing. (leveled a few xenon sectors for reference)
Bonus pack, plugin manager, and cheat pack for testing. Issues exist in vanilla as well. No BP scripts activated at all in these tests.
FPS viewed with xfire overlay

All numbers at max graphics but AA at 4 and AF at 8.
Dropping everything to lowest or off had an odd effect. Maximum idle FPS went up significantly, 160->190, but when any of the below fps drops occurred, they dropped to roughly the same FPS as they did when at Max, eg FAA does 150->100 at max. At lowest it did 190->102~

Disabling on board audio in bios had a very minor effect on total fps, but did nothing about the massive drops observed below.

FFDshow video/audio were both edited to exclude x3tc.exe. Haali was still installed as part of the CCCP but doesn't show in my DXdiag? Uninstalling all changed nothing.

All testing done in a Titan. PPC forward/left/right, CIG back, FAA up/down

Kha'ak 926 - Basically cleared sector before started testing, so very minimal enemies as only respawns and the odd pat were left.

Turrets off and minimal enemies
150 fps looking at basically nothing, just my ship from the F2 default view, maybe a few Kha ships far off. Using this number as rough baseline

Surrounded by ~10 Kha'ak fighters, my turrets off, Third person view drops FPS ~60, First person drops 30~.
This drop seems to scale with the number of fighters.

During first person a m5 rammed me and exploded behind me, major FPS drop of about 80. Unsure if due to the ram or its death.

All Turrets on Attack all.
When firing PPC's and CIGS, fairly linear reduction in FPS depending on shots on screen. Stops at ~130.

Using cheat menu, cleared entire sector except a guardian, third person view, camera tilted so Guardian was just fully visible above ship. This PPC effect above held true, and when the whole line started impacting, cost another ~20fps.

FAA's drop 50~ FPS, regardless of whether target destroyed or not, this reduction stacks with more FAA shots.

Firing FAA's in First person, with all shots being fired behind the ship and out of view, still results in the fps drop.

Thyn's Excavation - After entering the gate, FPS is about 60 with no combat, once past most of the stations so the HQ there is leaving off screen, FPS raises to about 75. Doing the same pass but with everything hostile causes roughly the same slow downs as above. Just with smaller numbers, so when FAA go off, it drops to 35~ against just one fighter.

This is the real issue, in sectors of any substance, fighting brings the game to a crawl. Add that after the game world gets older everything seems to slow down proportionately, to where I'm getting 25 FPS just Idle in Legends home or Omicron after 20 hours and only 5-10 ships of my own. Now add my own stations and traders, and I drop to ~4 FPS during combat, which is unplayable. (Although I've managed at least 500 hours anyways, just most of it was not combat, or if it was, i just flew the tankiest ship I could and let the turrets win my battles)
Although most of my testing involved FAA, in my experiences playing so far, they are just the worst offenders (I never use PSG's since they are much worse, but that is well known). After the game gets going (50+h) the rest of the slowdowns get bad enough that it's unplayable even without FAA.

Although I did not test them, PBG's usually cause a large drop in all the games I've played. The one PBG i did see in this clean install caused no noticeable slowdown at all against the starting Elite. (Maybe 15 seconds into the game, fought it, I died in the first pass) Not really a conclusive test.

Performance problems while effects are playing are quite often associated with sound-related issues. Your sound drivers do need updating (go to the Realtek site, not Windows Update, and make sure you get the correct ones for your OS), but I don't see any of the usual suspects when it comes to your audio codecs.

That's what I was afraid of. I don't know anything of the incompatible codecs, I was hoping it was something that had been seen before.

Grabbed the newest Realtek HD audio drivers, 2.67 x64. Uninstalled the old ones, installed new, unfortunately no difference.

Thanks

I cannot see any other issues from your DxDiag. You said you disabled use of Ffdshow with X3TC but what about with X3AP?
