Just saying it forward: I give everyone 2 posts to make good, in context posts(proper english, as always, is optional). After that I'm ignoring what you have to say in that thread that's directed to what we previously were talking about.

Re: [TC] Extraordinarily PISSED OFF - Screwed again on DiD
I'm kinda laughing, cause well, "Dead is Dead" The title of the game start say's it all!tatakau wrote:GOD DAMMIT, I am so pissed off right now, I cannot believe this stupid PIECE OF JUNK game. That's TWICE now, TWICE!
First, 7 game-days into DiD, the New Home mission bugged, forever putting Die Hard out of my reach, so I had no choice but to drop it and start over because there's pretty much zero chance of Egosoft of pulling it together and fixing it with a patch at this point.
And second, just now, I'm 3 game-days in, just knocked out two plots and almost done with two others, locked down good reputations with everyone (including the Yaki, damn that took some effort to keep from dipping), had me a good Springblossom and a fully kitted Boreas, and whaddya know - I go to jump sectors, and BAM: the game just up and crashes! THE GAME CRASHED!!!!
WHAT THE HELL, EGOSOFT. WHAT THE HELL. What am I supposed to do, when this game keeps SCREWING me over like this?? How many hours have I wasted trying to get that stupid achievement, being super careful, doing everything right, taking the safe routes, etc, only to be screwed over by some bug in your code? Between these two games, I have been trying to get Die-Hard for probably three WEEKS!
This is just ridiculous. Just. Ridiculous. This was just senseless, pointless. Absolutely no reason for this. I DEMAND RECOMPENSE.
And don't you dare tell me to calm down - this is a 100% legitimate reason to be pissed. I cannot even remember having being this pissed off for at least a decade.
The game mode is so exciting, fun, and rewarding that it really takes a lot of mental effort to admit that the Dead-is-Dead game mode is broken.
I still urge to start a new Dead-is-Dead game. A part of me refuses to realize that the implementation is broken; but I'll be sure to be reminded again when I lose my progress to a crash or some other freak outside event.
Our only hope is for Egosoft/Steam to do a proper implementation.

You should expect these things in new games these days. Until quality control actually does their job, no game being published will be polished even after 10 years of it being released.
You are now in the age where games aren't games any more. There "fads" that require you to get another achievement.
This is the life of gaming now. For ever more you can expect games to be pushed through their testing phase to meet deadlines which a small fat man dictates. Never again are games made by gamers and dictated by gamers, where their own standards demand the game be polished before it can even be published.
You can only pray we go back to pixel work.....

Not to mention that games have gone from filling a couple of floppy disks to spanning multiple CDs or even DVDs. I'm sure the fact that the amount of code in your average game has increased thousandfold has absolutely no effect on the amount of patching they need to function properly. It's all about deadlines, making money and lack of dedication and polish, right?shikaka04 wrote:You should expect these things in new games these days. With that said I'm sure the software companies could, and should, weed out the worst bugs, but with millions or perhaps billions of lines of code to debug I imagine you quickly reach a point where you get relatively little reward for the amount of effort you put in and the little man holding the money say "stop".
Edit: I've had a few of those moments myself, as i had a period where the game would often crash randomly and make my computer lock up to the point where i had to pull the plug to get it to reboot. I lost countless hours due to that and it was so frustrating i didn't play the game for almost a year. So i definitely know how it feels
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am

I hear you, but exactly what sort of fix can they apply that doesn't also relate to other starts? If you are referring to actual program crashes then hell yeah everyone wants to see them gone forever. I love DiD too, but could not get far because of crashes / lockups. I know for a fact that my UD9 motherboard had a fault, and so can't say that it was always a TC bug. I got a new system running a couple of hours ago and am really eager to try DiD again. But it will be on TC. I believe that it's way too early in AP to be trusting it with DiD not just because of bug induced CTDs, but also because of broken missions. Remember the lockup in TC in the final mission was fixed in V3.1? How many years did it take ES to fix that?Erikaiht wrote:For Rebirth, I pray they fix DiD.
This is a hugely complex game with many extra layers added over the years, to expect it 100% bug free is unreasonable (if not near impossible for the devs to achieve).tatakau wrote:But no amount of caution, or preparation, or whatever, can save you from a programming glitch. And that's what really gets my goat. I love this game, I really do. I actually just bought it for my little brother as a bundle over on Steam, not six hours ago.
At the moment, though, I wish I could take it back. This kinda thing happening just makes me sad...
... sad? That is actually kinda hilarious - I'm pretty sure I'm going through the five stages of grieving right now. :-p
I’ve played DiD 3 times to about 50hrs per game. Even without the glitches, some of the plots will drive you mad without the ability to reload…. Like capturing that M5 in balance of power (20 reloads), or capturing that TL (20 highly trained marines lost when 2 pods failed to make it first time).
I don’t do DiD any more. And my family complained about my bad temperament (true).
I just ignored the built in DiD (apart from having my fill of stock TC prior to having it on steam anyway). Realistically it is basically a flawed concept, since on the basses that there are always ways to end your game out of your control (from errors in the game code, windows, hardware faults, power cuts, etc, etc) making the numbers of hours TC requires pretty hard to reach without issue and that to implement DiD differently is fairly trival to exploit into non-DiD (e.g. ways to intentially kill the games process), I dont see how Egosoft of Steam can ever "fix" it short of sending an Egosoft employee round to watch you play or somthing.
I suspect it's Steam, rather than the game which is stable on the disc version but I have noticed a lot of CTD on the Steam version.
Since 3.1 my disc version has only crashed once while building a complex, Steam version seems to be crashing almost at random.

That does really suck but......
If you can find a game that will run for hours on end and not crash ever on thousands of pc's please let me know so i can play it......
The thing with DiD is that they had to make sure you cant cheat by closing the game before you are killed. Because of this if the game crashes its seen as a death. It would be very hard to create something that could tell the difference between you closing the game and it crashing, and it would have to work with Steam to work.
Im at close to 800 hours into TC play and I have 23/33 achievements.
I have not finished all of the missions. I usually get such a huge empire before im done with them that i restart.
There are so many easy ways to die that DiD has just never seemed worth it to me.

Hi,
Sorry, but are you saying that a game crash counted as a death in your DiD game? That's rubbish! Still, I suspect the game (Steam?) thinks you've exited the game to avoid being killed or something - I always wondered if that would work. Still, pretty harsh when your situation is genuine.
However, the game mode is called "Dead is Dead" not "Crash is dead" or "Power cut is dead" or "Steam is currently unavailable is dead"...
Personally I'd never play DiD as random events can screw you over fairly easily. I.e. you enter a sector and a big ship decides to jump in at that moment - dead. I'd love the challenge, but the number of totally random unpredicable "deaths" I've experienced in a normal game suggests this mode will never work for me. Plus I mod and my games are hard lol.
I would like to add that vanilla TC rarely crashed for me, if at all. My modded games could be a little more unstable at times but that's modding for you.
