[AP]OOS initial contact help

Post by lt_wentoncha » Wed, 25. Jan 12, 00:14

Howdy all,

I have a problem, when I have a fleet of four M2s (1x Megalodon and 3x Boreases) patrolling War sectors, whether they're in fleet or wing, one of the Boreases will always get almost absolutely destroyed when going after enemy M2s (Osakas mostly) OOS. What can I do to improve this situation, so that initial contact is more evenly distributed?

I have the same issues, so much that I have withdrawn my fleet of Tyr, Osaka, and Wodin with Aegir escorts away from the battle.

Are your ships in an actual 'fleet' with a commander? I find this doesn't work well if all the ships are in fleet as the commander separates the ships and they die alone not covering each other. I assign only a few of the Capitals to the fleet and have the escorts assigned to each outside of fleet command so they stay together. But the commander still tries to deal with to much at once.

Better success with simple patrol command with ships assigned to support each other. Then they do more of what I intend.

But in the war sectors, the AI is really obvious in its intention to destroy a few of my ships no matter what I do. If I have one capital in system it is almost fair, only spawning 2 titans grouped ever few enemy spawns. sometimes the Aegir escorts do enough and my patrol survives intact. but any more then 1 capital in war sector and the AI spawns up to 4 Titans all in a group, with 1 or 2 more at other gates, plus M7M and other ships, and some of my patrol will die. I am doubting the war is designed all that well at the moment. It doesn't seem like my actions change it so much as my presence effects it. Seems not very dynamic except in that the player can't 'win' no matter what goal they set.

OOS isnt real combat - it is a numbers game - so engagement tactics dont exist, I think missiles dont exist either.

Its much improved in AP, but still seems to be a case of needeing to *vastly* outgun the enemy with conventional guns to keep you ships intact and to have anything like the kind of outcomes you get when your are IS and in control of your ships, control their attack angle etc and can give them fire support etc.

Also as AP has much tougher hulls, then it means the outcome of such combat tends to leave you with ships with half of thier equipment trashed making it all a pointless excerise as you cant store equipment, so you have to run around the universe and reequip it - for some reason the jumpdrive allways seems to be the first item to go

Best bet for OOS combat ius leaviung low value static things around - satelites from you own complex are ghood for this - then jump in yourself in an M7M whenever they get attacked.

you are best off using a carrier (and by carrier, i mean raptor, and by raptor, i may or may not mean 3x panthers) filled with the cheapest fighter that can mount MDs(teladi harrier) and have a CAG continually bring MD ammo to the carrier(s) so they can rearm, or if you prefer lasers then the HEPT(the split scorpion line of ships).

if you are terran, then this is even simpler. the valkyrie provides roflromic damage for such a cheap hull.

edit: im a tool, forgetting my own firebase idea. =P since the AI is so bent on destroying your assets, place an EQdock there, homebase and fill it with destroyers and corvettes. when they touch it, they will basically vaporise as they defense fleet will be right on top of em.

Just saying it forward: I give everyone 2 posts to make good, in context posts(proper english, as always, is optional). After that I'm ignoring what you have to say in that thread that's directed to what we previously were talking about.

this is so annoying,

on the topic I can only recommend getting tons of Lazertowers or cheap fighters (LT's are harder to start to get as you need a big complex but after that it is an infinite source of defense BUT being IS with hundreds of LT's looking at the gates is not a good idea) since cost of replacing LT is 0 and replacing a fighter is around 1-3 million but replacing fighters is a tedious process

It is that.
The war is designed to work only if you are in the sector.
Personally, I think that this goes against the entire concept of an "alive" universe that doesn't turn off the lights and goes home when you leave the sector.

Just treat the war as an entertainment event that is staged specifically for you.
You can go to such a show or you can ignore it. You can not expect all the actors to play without the guest of honour - so they are goofing off, sniping at random ships for the hell of it...

I like your analogy Gazz except for the part where the symphony does not disrupt me in the middle of what I'm doing (SETA) and tell me about how the third movement is coming along after I've shown no interest in attending the performance. :P

Hopefully someone takes it on themselves to make the war a bit more interesting by giving you measures of success. I can destroy Terran fleets all day and leave no impact. If it was just for my enjoyment then I would like the black list manager to work properly so my traders don't try to sneak into the show so often. :)

Lasting success would end the war. It is not designed for that to happen. =P
