Is this game best played with a joystick or keyboard and mouse?

I can use any really, but someone told me a joystick is not that good for X3TC. What are your opinions?

It was a horrible idea to try to design the interface for a joystick...
Where is it?

I fly and fight by joystick, but live by keyboard and mouse

Too many hotkeys not to take advantage of the Keyboard in this game.

im a personal beiever that its as good as sacrilege to fly without a joystick!!

i do use the keyboard and mouse for management though, but any flying or fighting i do has to be done in a joystick

Sadly though to comfortably use my joystick I put my mouse on top of the desk and place the joystick on my mouse pad so it's comfortable to reach. Thats the only way I know to position it right now. So all 3 at once is difficult :D

You will find it rather hard to use the interface with a joystick, it works for flying, but the game has rather a lot that isn't flying in it.

I use the mouse to start the game. Then only stick and keyboard.
Maverick: Requesting permission for flyby.
Air Boss Johnson: That's a negative ghostrider, the pattern is full.
Goose: No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea.
Maverick: Sorry Goose, but it's time to buzz a Split.
Split: Split now give you .... Aaaarrriiiigh.

I guess it depends on what you feel comfortable using.

I use a Playstation 3 controller and keyboard.

From left to right, my setup is:

Keyboard
Joystick
Mouse

I use joystick for all maneuvering that is not autopilot.
I have my mouse handy for command menus and selecting stuff.

I personally feel that a joystick is a definite must for me, to the point that I would refuse to play without one. But, to each his own.

Joystick is fun, but I really need the keyboard too for the hotkeys and stuff.
I fly Terran for the accents

Yukk...i dont know how anyone can fly using that mouse follow method...but each to their own, i think it's unnatural.

I use stick for flying, keyboard for other stuff, mouse sometimes for selection too, but never flying.

I use a keyboard and mouse for X3TC and have no issues at all maneuvering my craft. Likewise, there are plenty out there who have no issues using a joystick or HOTAS with X3TC.

It's really up to you and what you like best. Though, I will say that you'll likely need to make extensive use of the mouse/keyboard when managing your player's assets/fleets/complexes/etc..

It did require some getting use to, but soon became very natural and effective :)

For me, I cannot fly without a joystick.

I use a laptop, with joystick for flying, and keyboard and touchpad for everything else.

Joystick for flying (except for Woden - that requires keys).
Do you miss dangerous pirates?
Try leading the target a little more...

Flying capships with mouse is managgeable but the joystick gives you the full pleasure. OFC it has to be 3 axis one + throtle control.

I have found a bit nonsense to ask this because the optimum is to use em all.
You can't steer the ship if any menu/map ect is open with the mouse. I can imagine to slide your ship with the mouse with a 2 axis indicator which tells you the actual ammount of sliding and steer + roll the ship with the joystick.
X to X3 is MENU SUPERIOR!
I think Egosoft has already worked out our doom, because Xenon AI will reach the stars! :D

Use stick for flying and shooting/ missiles and strafe

Mouse to click a target such as a missle long way off.

Keyboard for interface.

I agree with the comment already made - why one choice or the other? I use all three! The loss of a joystick would, in my opinion, significantly reduce the enjoyment of the game!
